May 26, 200322 yr I would like to have FMPU run as a service on either a w2000 server or win xp pro machine. I also need to be able to use FMP on the same machine (for local users). I currently have FMP server 5.5 dishing up about 40 dbs, but only 10 or so will be needed by the web interface db to be shared. What are my options, (no I do not really want to buy another machine) My main problem is that aside from our server machine the rest are used by staff, and I don't want the FMPU closed down. Q2. Is there a way to run FMPU on a machine that is also running FMP Server. Cheers Charles
May 26, 200322 yr All such ideas are not recommended, especially it will be impossible to run 2 FM on single machine. In theory you can run FMS and FM on single machine, but I wouldn't recommend that. With today's prices of HW and W2K it doesn't make sense. You will jeopardize the most precious value -- data.
May 26, 200322 yr Author I understand how you feel on a seperate machine, but My data is served from my server machine and is safe from loss, The real thing I would like to do is have FMPU run so that is is not accidentally stopped. Any decent serving type program runs like this. eg:FMP-Server, mail server, web server etc. So to rephrase my ??, how do people stop users (including administrators from accideltally stopping FMPU?
May 27, 200322 yr Author But any administrator can still accidentally shut down the app. If I have 3 admins and 50 staff, one of the admins might shut down fmpu thinking someone left it open. Surely ther must be a common solution that people use , ... no? I've seen a post that shows how it install it as a service using SERVEANY (sp?) but then I can not interact with it if I need to do any tweeking.
May 27, 200322 yr if they are admins, they should be able to remember not to shut down anything without asking first. You don't want to grant admin status to just about any idiot, do you? How about leaving little Post-It notes all over the place and using a desktop pattern/screensaver saying "PLEASE DO NOT TURN OFF!!!", glueing the on/off switch in the ON position, ... Be creative. Sometimes it even helps to just tell people to leave that machine alone, or even better: give them instructions on how to operate FileMaker Server/Unlimited , when and when not to shut down, etc.
May 27, 200322 yr Author No of course not but murphy's law prevails here. I take it that no one knows another way then? ...
May 27, 200322 yr Christian -- love that How about locking the machine. In FMU after unlocking will be screen: "If you switch this off, you are fired!"?
May 27, 200322 yr to run fm as a service is concerned this is the easiest way i found: http://www.digitalanswers.org/fmpnt.html works with 2000 / XPpro / NT i'm pretty sure you can set the preferences in your services to restart the service if it has been shutdown, and you can definately run the service in the foreground to allow users to interact with it
May 29, 200322 yr Author Thanks ChrisonMaui I thought I was hitting the wall on that one. Have you run into any problems that are not documented by running a FMP service. I am suprised this is not common knowledge for the Yoda's here. I don't think I know of any other application that provides a serving like function that just 'runs' on the desktop. At least some run in the tray to reduce the likelyhood of being terminated. I'm still a FMP fan but this seems weak. C.
June 8, 200322 yr Have you run into any problems that are not documented by running a FMP service not as of yet - but i only tried it for the first time about three weeks ago I don't think I know of any other application that provides a serving like function that just 'runs' on the desktop. the scrsrv.exe is from microsoft not filemaker - so you can run any third party application as a service (maybe have a p2p client running as a service would improve pr0n d/l)
