July 16, 200322 yr I've searched these forums looking for an answer to this question but haven't found it yet: Is it possible to automaticaly open databases when FMPro (or FMPro Unlimited) is launched? In other words, when I start the application can I have the application open the databases for me? I have about 10 I need to have open all the time, and want them to re-open automatically if the machine gets rebooted, for example. Thanks, Robert
July 16, 200322 yr Why not call the opening database? That will open FM if it is not already open. Works for me on Mac and Windows.
July 18, 200322 yr Author What if the database is password protected and the machine is rebooting automatically without any operator or admin intervention?
July 18, 200322 yr RE: What if the database is password protected "Try default password" RE: and the machine is rebooting automatically without any operator or admin intervention? How you can run any application without login to OS?
July 23, 200322 yr Author Do you ever have anything helpful to suggest, Anatoli? It seems all of your posts are sarcastic comments rather than helpful responses. Let me swing this scenario past your smug face: Windows 98 running Filemaker Pro Unlimited with 10 databases open and password protected. There's a small power interruption, not big enough to shut the machine down but big enough to reboot it. Windows 98 does not require anyone to login to use the OS and I could put shortcuts to either Filemaker or the databses themselves in the Startup folder. Now please don't ask "Why would anyone want to do that?" as a response because that's not helpful, but you have to admit this situation is possible. In that case, how could I have Filemaker open the databses automatically without me needing to type a password because I'm on the can or simply out having a good time (which i think you should try every once in a while). On second thought, I'd prefer if someone other than Anatoli responded. I'm tired of his smart-ass remarks in these forums.
July 23, 200322 yr You can create an 'opener' file with a default password of the master password for the other dbs that opens the remaining dbs on open, then create a WinBatch or possibly a batch file to run when the computer starts, which opens the opener file. You can have Win98 require a login, and you should, if you are on a network, I would think.
July 23, 200322 yr Basically the same as I've suggested. Or the second tip with default password will work as well. But some idiots, instead of trying suggested advice are spitting on people, which are trying to help them.
July 23, 200322 yr I saw no sarcasm in what Anatoli said. He's european, cut him some slack Just kidding Anatoli Easy, tiger. May be time to switch to decaf.
July 23, 200322 yr I think perhaps the poster just required more detailed information than he was provided, and it irked him. If you read the one liners and don't see how they help, then it could be frustrating. Not everyone's brain easily connects 2 and 3 and gets 5. That's why we're here in the first place, right? I do believe that we shouldn't have to 'think' for others, but at least pointing them in a particular direction as specifically as possible, without giving away the 'eureka!' moment, seems to be a big reason this forum exists.
July 23, 200322 yr Hi, What about browsing other Forums, so that Anatoli can help you there also.... Too bad you found that place. Hmmm. After some thinking...it won't be kind for them to have you there. Start your own Forum. See the FAQ for this.
July 24, 200322 yr Author -Queue- said: You can create an 'opener' file with a default password of the master password for the other dbs that opens the remaining dbs on open, Finally something I can run with! This 'opener' file, would this be a FMP file or some other format?
July 24, 200322 yr Author OK, here's what I tried: I created a blank DB called 'opener.fp5' and within that created a script to open the other DBs. Then I told opener.fp5 to execute the openDBs script on startup. HOWEVER, one of the DBs I want to start is the Web Security DB, which also opens Web Users and Web Fields automatically, but when called through the openDBs script only the Web Security DB opens, not the other two. Anyone know why this is? I got around the problem by using the Web Security DB as my 'opener' file. That when when Web Security is launched, it auto-launches Web Users and Web Fields (not sure how, BTW, it just does) and then it executes my openDBs script on startup. Is this what everyone was trying to "guide" me towards?
July 24, 200322 yr I had been trying to do this same thing for our FMP Unlimited server that opens several databases to host to the web. I never thought about setting the default password for the opener file. That works great! Thanks for the tip guys. John
