Hello,

I am creating a script that inserts text into a field, but I need the text to be formatted in italics. I do not need the whole field to be in Italics though. Is there anyway that I can just format that inputed text?

Thanks in Advance!

Hi Off,

What you are wanting to do is *not* currently native to FileMaker (we can hope that it will be in Version 7)

You might take a look at this file by Ray J. Cologon

Automatic Application of Multiple Character Formats in a Field http://www.nightwing.com.au/FileMaker/

It shows one workaround of sort of what of what you are wanting to do.

That sample file is very counter-intuitive. I've studied it before and failed to recreate similar results. Is there anywhere this technique is explained in a bit more English rather than FMese? I've gotten lost on Ray's field formattings. 'Bold' and 'italic' fields are in plain text, while 'plain' fields are formatted with bold/italics, etc. Any comprehensible explanation available?

Thanks.

I haven't studied Ray file, only peeked inside and it seemed a lot like Steve Murray's file below. Anyway, I have implemented his approach, and it wasn't that hard to follow. Perhaps this one would be easier to follow:

Text Style Steve Murray http://www.fmfiles.com/tnt11.html

Thanks, Lee. I'll check that out when fmfiles will allow me to download it.

Hi Off and Queue,

Just thinking out laud here. Maybe I should have added that IMO the styling of the text would be the easiest part.

Thinking back when I implemented Steve's way of doing this in my Buttons and Prefs files Click Here (to see Sample), the hardest part was making it work within the solution (read the information about changing the text in the buttons).

And, this was handling all of the text within a field, not trying combined it with other text by inserting it before or after too.

If you get this to work, please share with us by make a demo of it. Of course, maybe version 7 will make this a moot point.

TIA

Lee
