Tom T Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 I have enabled my database to show the Status Area when it is on the web. However, it appears to be missing several options and I can't figure out why. In Form View the following buttons normally appear, as I read in FM books and as I see in other databases online: Edit Record New Record Delete Record Sort Find All Search However, in my database I only see: Search Show All I am using the Lavender Set Up View. I've tried other views and get other status areas but they all consistently are missing the same options. Any ideas? Tom
Anatoli Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 I guess Instant Web Publishing. If you need more control go for Custom Web Publishing
Unable Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 Hi Tom. Are you psychic? IWP is WYSIWYG. You need to hone your psychic abilitites to grasp how your db file design is responsible for the HTML/CDML which is generated by FileMaker. IWP WYSIWYG depends upon you and your abilities as a db designer. That is the way in which you can attain control. The rest of us use CWP to control the browser and db interface. Bon chance.
ErnieG Posted September 1, 2003 Posted September 1, 2003 Actually, Tom, I wonder if it could have something to do with the access privileges assigned to the password you use (assuming there's a password). I notice the buttons that don't appear are the ones that could actually change a record, so maybe the password is missing those privileges (as assigned by "Access privileges" under the "File" menu. Tom T Posted September 2, 2003 Author Posted September 2, 2003 I am on a fast track to learn HTML and then dive into CWP. However, telling me to learn CWP isn't a useful answer. I am looking at two different databases on the web, both using IWP, but one has a full status area and mine doesn't. Ernie, I looked into the access privileges. At this moment there is no password. All the boxes give everyone access to everything (of course, I'll change that soon). So I don't think the problem is there. I will have to get a copy of the other database that I'm looking at to see what the difference is between that one and mine. But I thought posing the question here could speed things up. Tom
Unable Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 Hey buddy, I didn't tell you to learn CWP. I told you to hone your psychic powers.
Tom T Posted September 2, 2003 Author Posted September 2, 2003 OK, I solved the problem. I looked more closely at the Set Up Views. Only Fern Green and Blue and Gold 2 bring up all the options. Unfortunately they also create a generic and quite ugly Form, destroying all my nifty formatting. Wheat, Lavender and Blue and Gold 1 have the limited options I related above but they preserve the Form I created. So I will have to live with the limited options and create buttons in the form to perform what is lacking, which is what I had already done, but I was hoping to save space. Not sure what you mean, Unable, about "honing your psychic powers." One day I was standing on the street in Berkeley and a person came up to me and asked if I knew where the psychic fair was. I said, "Look, if you have to ask, don't even bother going. You should already KNOW where it is." Tom
Unable Posted September 2, 2003 Posted September 2, 2003 On a more useful note Tom, when you feel you're ready for CWP there are several web based examples on the Sample Files forum which cover a lot of different issues as well as provide HTML/CDML code structure examples and db files and information that works and is meant to demonstrate and explain. I know, I just posted another one.
Vaughan Posted September 3, 2003 Posted September 3, 2003 Tom Err, perhaps as way of explanation... many of us here know *nothing* about IWP except perhaps that we don't need it. My experience was to turn it on, browse the results for 10 minutes (till the novelty wore off) then turn it off again. That was FMP 4.0, and I haven't bothered to check it out since then. All the real fun is with CWP. I've gotta tell you though that the FileMaker Connection Wizard in Claris HomePage 3 was a really great way to get started and learn CDML. If you can get a copy it still works afaik with FMP 6.

You are very patient Vaughan! I was out I guess in 2 minutes, but I am ready for it if I want publish on web my nonexistent stamp collection
Unable Posted September 4, 2003 Posted September 4, 2003 How many of your nonexistent stamps are rare Anatoli?
