Henry Posted December 1, 2003 Posted December 1, 2003 Hi there, now starting learn web system. Now i'm planing to create a web system that able to let customer create/view/edit record/order online with web browser(eg. IE) and on the office will have a FMP to open the system and do further function like reporting and analysis. So, i need to learn the web language, after research, i think FM will work better with PHP or Lasso. So, i will choose one of them to learn. I already know the basic of ASP, so which one you think is more suitable for me and which one is more powerful add can do more function on the web. The other question is can somebody let me know what is the relationship for XML with all the tools(PHP, Lasso, CDML). Actually i didn't know much about XML. Regards, Henry
Garry Claridge Posted December 1, 2003 Posted December 1, 2003 XML is one format that can be used to return data from a request to FM. The main method is CDML, which returns data formatted by Format files. (You create the Format files.) PHP can handle data returned by a request, whether it is XML or a custom format (CDML). All the best. Garry
Mariano Peterson Posted January 9, 2004 Posted January 9, 2004 If you are familiar with JScript for ASP, then by all means PHP will be much easier for you to learn. You should also make use of the FX class (free at www.iviking.org) which takes care of all the XML manipulation for you, and abstracts the FileMaker interaction into very easy to use methods. With PHP, you won't have to know a thing about XML. Also, if you want to leverage your ASP skills, you could create your JScript class that sends HTTP requests to FileMaker and parses the XML result. Let me know if you're interested in doing it with ASP. Do you use JScript or VBScript?
