DanBrill Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 I've not played around with web publishing at all yet, but need to start thinking about learning how to. As I understand it, you need to serve your own web pages to be able to do this. Right now I just use an ISP to host my web site, and I don't have the $$ for an in-house web server, a static IP address, and the necessary bandwidth. Are there any ISPs out there that run FileMaker Server so that they could host my database? If so, what are they charging? Would it be cheaper to go this route for a while before jumping in whole hog and getting the hardware I'd need? Thanks for any advice, Dan
stanley Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 Dan: There are a few, but I haven't used any of them; I've compiled a list, as I've got a client wanting to go the IWP route soon: http://www.machost.com/ http://www.oditech.com/fmhosting.lasso?-token.sub_section=fmwebdetails http://www.edition.net/ http://www.forest.net/services/shared/filemaker.php All of the above are using FileMaker 5 or 6; Edition.net is going FMS7 soon, and have a mailing list you can join in order to be in the loop on that. Prices seem to vary pretty widely, and some of them are less than clear about exactly what you're getting. If you find one you like, please post it up, as I'm looking for any feedback I can get, too, before taking the plunge myself. -Stanley
stanley Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 Dan: Oops; my mistake - the one going to 7 with the mailing list is Oditech.com, not Edition.net. -Stanley
DanBrill Posted June 11, 2004 Author Posted June 11, 2004 Thanks Stanley. As for web-enabling my solution, I won't go backward and apply it to FM6. I'll just start with the FM7 campatible version. That means that I'll wait until I see how changing to 7 changes their price structure. The prices for 6 look reasonable untill you see that they want an extra $10 a month per database. Under the FM6 paradigm of 1 table per file, this gets really expensive really fast. I'd be into them for about $5,000 a year!!! I think I just might be able to serve my own for a little less! But if they keep that structure for FM7 its a good deal -- one data file and one interface file. Thanks for the info, Dan
Garry Claridge Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 I think that they would need FM 7 Server Advanced. As FM 7 Server Advanced has not been released yet, none may exist. Good Luck. Garry
