Ship dates for FMS 8 and FMSA 8?

Featured Replies

Any "word on the street" predictions of when FM Server 8 and FM Server 8 Advanced will ship?

Since the file format between 7 and 8 is supposedly compatible, could you host a file with FM Server 7, and begin development of FM 8 features using FM 8 on your desktop with the file hosted in Server 7?

Yes, you can host FM8 clients via FMS7 with no trouble.

But the problem is you won't be able to use any of the new features if you use a 7 server. Why don't they get their act together and get it all out at the same time. Other companies do this so I'm not sure why they can't.

They may have pushed to have Client ready for DevCon. Would you rather they waited until all their ducks were in a row and present it then? Hold up Client until Server was ready? Or hold it for presentation next year instead? Good grief. Sorry if I sound gruff, but some people are never satisfied no matter what you give them.

I think FileMaker is performing above and beyond for us. And what do some of us do? Complain about what still isn't absolutely perfect according to them. FileMaker? You just keep doing what you're doing. You have come alive; you are listening to our needs; and you are providing incredible improvements in record time.

I agree totally. I'm not sure what I would do with FMS8 if it came out at the same time as FMP8 anyway, as it will take me two weeks to absorb what's new, how it works, and how to deploy it. Some people will just complain about anything.

Some people will just complain about anything.

You make it sound like it's a bad thing...

The server doesn't affect the clients and its the clients that determine the feature for the most part...I am using all (as far as I can tell) the new features (eg. quick find, calendar drops, etc.) and the database is host with a server 7.

I think there is at least one feature that won't work if hosting with server 7. The new date searching options... anything else?

Also, you won't get the improvements to IWP if you don't update to server advanced 8. Form-based authentication, popup calendar support, etc.

I still agree that it's a good idea to release FMP 8 and FMPA 8 before the servers... no one is going to implement this on a live system right away anyhow, and this gives people time to play with the new features and modify solutions prior to implementation.

I've already started implementing 8 features on our live system. But I've always stood too close to the fire.

8 works just fine from 7 Server. The minor limitations not withstanding.

I'm interested in upgrading to Server 8 Advanced from Server 7. How much is that going to run me?

Here's an overview of the features that won't work on a FileMaker 8 database hosted on Server 7 Advanced:

It really is very little that won't work.

Of course you won't get any new features of v8 in IWP until FMSA 8 comes out.
