theyetti Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 (edited) Hi All, just a question about the Define Fields screen. When defining fields for a table that has lots and lots and lots of different fields is it possible to group them into groups? Say for instance I'm working on the supplier table I'd like to group the fields for address details together under one heading then group the fields for banking details under another heading, etc. I could then hide or show a group as required. Cheers Pedro -) Edited November 26, 2005 by Guest
Inky Phil Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 Hi Pedro I don't think you can do what you want. The best I have acheived is to create global fields, call them something that stands out like ....................................................ADDRRESSES and use them as dividers in the define fields screen using custom order. At least that way you can group them visually. HTH Phil
theyetti Posted November 26, 2005 Author Posted November 26, 2005 Hi Inky Phil, thanks, I didn't think it was possible. I also wanted to find out if anyone else thought this might be useful. Cheers Pedro -)
Lee Smith Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 You can achieve better control with the fields by adopting a Name Convention such as what is suggested in Core Solutions Standards.PDf available: http://www.coresolutions.ca/filemaker/standards.php HTH Lee
Ender Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 I try to name my fields so they are grouped together alphabetically: Address City Address Number Address State Address Street Address Street Type Address Zip But ideally, you would not have "lots and lots and lots of different fields" in a single table. With a normalized structure, the number of fields in each table is usually not too high.
SteveB Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 If the fields break into logical groups, why not consider using the new Tabs widget? Steve
