Newbies terry_dactil Posted January 9, 2006 Newbies Posted January 9, 2006 Hi all, please forgive what may seem a stupid question. I have created a field incrementing by one, but if i delete a file it leaves a gap rather than moving all the files back one. Is there a way to move automatically files into the gap? Thanks in advance for any comments
Lee Smith Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Are you talking about a gap in a serial number? If so, I recommend that you leave them as they are, as it is dangerous to change Serial Number like this, especially if you have used them in a relationship. After all, they are only numbers. If it is something else, let us know what you have now, and what you want the result to be. Lee
Newbies terry_dactil Posted January 10, 2006 Author Newbies Posted January 10, 2006 Hi Lee, thanks for the prompt reply, you are quite right when you say they are just numbers, they do not form any part of any unique serial number but i just wanted the numbers to look neat (and consecutive), i think i may just delete the field (i just hate being beaten). :B
Canucks Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 Does it matter which record comes first? If not, I may suggest you create a script for empty out all the data in the record and reuse the serial #. That only works if you create a "delete" button but actually it's a script button to empty out all data in the record. Hope that helps.
comment Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 i just wanted the numbers to look neat (and consecutive) Try labeling them with the record number symbol "@@".
BruceJ Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Try labeling them with the record number symbol "@@". I was just testing this out to make sure this works and whammo.. when I come back to post this as a solution I see someone else realized this 20 minutes ago! I use the "@@" on my layouts when I have a list view. It lets the user see how many items are on the list. This is simpler than the "Record 10 of 457 Found" type of insertion that many of us use somewhere on the record information.
Newbies terry_dactil Posted January 11, 2006 Author Newbies Posted January 11, 2006 What a great world this is where everyone is pleased to help each other. Thanks all for such quick responses, i will go and investigate how to apply the @@ function :
