June 29, 200619 yr Newbies Hi folks, this may be a silly question but is my first time doing runtimes. Can Runtimes be shared on 2 or 3 machines? The solution is simple, only one file. Thank you.
June 29, 200619 yr Raz is right in that a runtime is single user only but it can be run on FM server and accessed by everyone - just one at a time Just mention that it case it helps Phil
August 15, 200619 yr I understand that runtimes can be shared when served by FM 7 or FM 8. But, the clients in the LAN must have a copy of FM in their machines or the solution in the server is shared?
August 15, 200619 yr Yes. If the file is hosted on FM Server then each users needs a copy of FM Pro to access it. The alternative is to share the file using Instant Web Publishiing. IWP is good but it cannot do everything the client (FM Pro) can.
September 12, 200619 yr I've been sharing a runtime solution over a TCP/IP network for some time, with no server installed just on a shared folder on the network. Only one user can login at a time, but I've been able to access it from all the 5 machines that are on the network. This flies in the face of what has been said above, but I can only tell you what I have been doing. Regards seaDog
September 12, 200619 yr It depends on how you define "sharing". I believe this discussion is about multiple clients aaccessing the file simultaneously. Time-sharing is not included in this.
September 16, 200619 yr You're confusing the runtime engine with the data files. The runtime engine cannot be shared anywhere by any system. The data files associated with the engine can be hosted by FileMaker Server and then accessed by a regular copy of FileMaker Pro. These files are just like any other FileMaker Pro files; they just have a flag set in their headers to associate them with a particular instance of the runtime engine. HTH. Steven
October 6, 200619 yr hold on, you've all lost me. 1) if i installed a runtime version on a server and 3 other versions on 3 clients, then only 1 user at a time is able to access the DB on the server? 2) where do you download the runtime version from? 3) what was that about Instant web publishing to overcome Q1?
