Rob P Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 (edited) [File A]-< [File B] How do you solve this? I have a basic one to many relationship that, when I look in reverse (from the many side) I'm seeing multiple records when I should only ever see one. Puzzled, I examined the relationship and saw nothing odd there. I examined the keys and they were normal. I looked for duplicates in both files and only one record represented each. So I created a new field in the many file (we'll call it file and remapped the relationship to that new key. I did a replace on the new key with the key data from the original. It worked, I was now only seeing what appears to be a one to one relationship (remember I'm viewing this from the perspective of the many file looking at only one record). As a temporary fix, I added the new key field to the original relationship. Since the original appeared to be more of a cartesian product, the addition of the second field I figured would filter it and it did...for a moment. Then I noticed several records again displaying the same data...now this time it's not all records but a select few but they're still wrong. Somehow the index corruption transferred to the new key field. I've tried compact, optimize and recover, none have any effect. I've turned indexing off, on, changed data type. Nothing has an effect. I'VE NEVER SEEN THIS HAPPEN BEFORE. Client is 8v3 Server is 8v2 Edited October 25, 2006 by Guest
ThatOneGuy Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Hi Rob: Kinda hard to come up with a "magic bullet" for your predicament, but I'll make a stab at it. My guess is that the values in your keyField in FileA are not perfectly unique (even if that phrase is logically impossible). You may not have duplicates, but there may be records that share the same keyValue. You can do a little testing to find out. Create a button/script to Go To Related Records from FileB (your "many" file, a.k.a., the "child" file) to the parent records in FileA. Locate the suspicious records in FileB, then click the GTRR button to open up the related parent(s) in a separate window. Scroll through that found set to inspect the values in the keyField. Of course it's just a hunch, but no one had responded to your topic. This little gremlin has bitten me in the past. Let us know what you find. :goodluck:
Rob P Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 I think we've finally come to a conclusion that the file is damaged and needs to be rebuilt. }:| Thanks for replying. I had been losing faith in FMForums for lack of response to my posts.
ThatOneGuy Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Well, that's a bummer if the file is indeed corrupt. Sorry to hear it's come down to that. And I hope you don't grow disillusioned with FMForums. Unfortunately, not all questions get answered. Some are tougher than others. Also, I can't recall whether your topic appeared in the Recent Topics sidebar. Not all new topics appear there ... don't know why. I think I found your topic only by clicking the Unanswered Posts link. Hang in there, Rob, and keep working it!
Inky Phil Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Rob I think your comment about lack of responses is a bit uncalled for. I have just checked your profile and cannot find a single topic that you have started which has not had a reply!
Rob P Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 My apologies. There are more details than you're seeing but I don't need to go into that. It's not like I have options since FileMaker Cafe banned me for helping someone. Go figure.
Lee Smith Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Do not judge our Forum by your experience with the Cafe. The Cafe banned many of us here, for lots of stupid reason. I was banned because I refused to pay his membership fee for the privilege of helping others. I never posted a question, but he claimed I had done searches. Yes, I did, to find other threads that would be of help to others asking questions. When I posted my displeasure here, he bombarded me with Email with threats of suits. A lot of hogwash. Anyway, my experience has been that a lack of responses to a thread can usually be attributed to how clear the poster was with their question. I haven't read this tread here, so I'm not saying that was the case here, I have only scanned it. In doing this, my attention was drawn to it by the statement of a lack of response to your question, and your condemnation of the Forum. If you are not happy with our Forum, I can send you a list of other FileMaker list that you can try instead. Lee
Rob P Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 My gosh, folks. Some of you are wound a little too tight. I merely mentioned that I appreciated the response because I had not had a lot of luck in times past. This was a while ago (years) which was when I found the Cafe. I found the cafe (at the time) to be extraordinarily helpful. Obviously times have changed. The Cafe bans for even the slightest hint of an opposing view. I hope that doesn't happen here. Again...I apologize.
ThatOneGuy Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 I apologize. That's good enough for me, Rob! I took your original remark simply as a "Whew! I was starting to wonder if I'd get a reply." statement, not as a criticism of the forum.
LaRetta Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 Hey, Rob, you can relax here. Stephen has NEVER banned anyone. We have a mix of people and each responds differently. I took your post in the same light as ThatOneGuy. :wink2:
