RT Posted November 12, 2006 Posted November 12, 2006 (edited) [color:gray]Okay first post here hope it is in the correct place. I have FM8.5 and am loving it, i have semi-mastered design and summaries and calculations i am pleased with my self and like my new program. i have looked at the tutorials and bought a big book (using FM8 by love, lane and bowers and i realise i have a lot to learn. [color:blue]So to my problem i go and create a template "purchase orders" i then create another template "inventory" now when i create a new purchase order i would like to populate the price fields, description automatically, i can set the product ID up correctly as a drop down menu and can see all my items. But for the life of me i cannot get the prices to auto fill nor the description also i cannot add no more than 8 items to my purchase order ? can some one please explain or create the two templates i have mentioned so i can see what you have done so i can recreate the files and end this problem i am having, at times i am nearly being driven to tears. Thank you Robert sorry if the question seems easy but this has stumped me for days : Edited November 12, 2006 by Guest
Søren Dyhr Posted November 13, 2006 Posted November 13, 2006 As far as I remember does this thread and download cover these aspects: http://www.fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/177621/post/209611/hl// --sd
RT Posted November 14, 2006 Author Posted November 14, 2006 (edited) thanks for your reply, the example shows me a lot but i am still having problems. i thought to do what i want to do would be very basic as the template is already done for me i have attached the files if anyone has the time can they please tell me where i am going wrong or what i am missing. thank you Robert fmtest.zip Edited November 14, 2006 by Guest
RT Posted November 15, 2006 Author Posted November 15, 2006 i have done it and without the sample thread supplied by Søren Dyhr an easy answer for beginners can be found at this link http://filemakertoday.com/com/showthread.php?t=10837 Regards Robert
comment Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Too bad you did not take advantage of the advice offered. Because you won't get very far using repeating fields instead of a LineItems join table. So perhaps the answer wasn't as EASY, but it was CORRECT (unlike some other forum...).
RT Posted November 15, 2006 Author Posted November 15, 2006 Too bad you did not take advantage of the advice offered. Because you won't get very far using repeating fields instead of a LineItems join table. So perhaps the answer wasn't as EASY, but it was CORRECT (unlike some other forum...). i did try to take advice and i tried to pick the solution apart but after 4 hours still could not do what i wanted to do, the solution above was to confusing for me but great if you wanted to copy it and add your own design elements, but i wanted to learn that is why i posted the attachment, just two tables from templates that is why i was so happy that in 2 minutes i succeeded in what i have been trying to do for weeks. and i have looked everywhere to find an answer FM help ,filemaker site and here, even considered a $75 phone call to FMinc so if some one can download my test file so i can look at it i would appreciate it and maybe i would learn another technique the right technique. my post did not mean to degrade this forum but the answer i found was clear and concise and it was a weight off my shoulders when i clicked from layout mode to form mode and saw all my fields filled in.
mr_vodka Posted November 15, 2006 Posted November 15, 2006 Hi Robert, As the others have pointed out in the previous posts, using a repeating field schema is not a good idea. It limits you as you found out. Take a look at the sample I posted on this thread. It is a basic order/lineitem/products setup, so you can pretty much see the mechanics of it and easily incorporate it into your solution.
RT Posted November 15, 2006 Author Posted November 15, 2006 mr vodka thanks for posting the link i will have a look into it later it seems a lot easier to understand. i have just had a developer visit me and he showed me how to do it, now because i am referencing different databases he showed me my way (lookup fields) i said this was wrong and showed him the example provided by Søren Dyhr he said that is fine if all the fields are in one file mine are not. anyway at least i saw a professional developer work in front of me and was very impressed with the speed and experience he had you guys are worth every penny he also advised me to upgrade to 8.5 advanced so when i create a new file from a template i can copy and paste the fields etc into my original file this will make auto inserting the data a lot easier for me. again thanks forum for your time and answers Robert
RT Posted November 16, 2006 Author Posted November 16, 2006 okay last effort, then i need a break or i will have to pay to get me over this hurdle, i have added the join table but still nothing shows in the template i copied the example given by mr vodka (a portal) but still it does not input the data. would someone please complete this puzzle for me normally i master problems in a couple of hours but this is now getting surreal. thanks in advance Robert robert.zip
mr_vodka Posted November 16, 2006 Posted November 16, 2006 Robert, First, your match key from the PO table is wrong. It needs to be the OrderID not ProductID. I have made some modifications to your file so that you can see how it should work relationally. I am only going to attach the one file because I did not change the Inventory file. Also please read the link to the White Paper that is in my signature. It will definately help you out. Purchase_Orders_revised.zip
RT Posted November 16, 2006 Author Posted November 16, 2006 Thank you John for taking time to look at my problem and everything has become much clearer now, i guess my problems was that i was looking at the paint instead of the picture and i would not have done this on my own "yet". There was a lot of moving of fields which i now realise has to be done instead of my way or just "linkng the tables together" i am going to practise what i have learnt and intergrate it into my company "don't laugh database" and thanks for commenting the fields so i understand what you did your white paper aswell as your website is very informative i will have a good read tonight. Regards Robert.
RT Posted November 17, 2006 Author Posted November 17, 2006 one more problem, i have copied mr vodkas example and recreated all the settings/fields/tables in Mr vodkas example and my DB is the same as your example, but on the portal i cannot enter any data on any of the fields they are not clickable, even if i drag a separate field onto the layout and link it to my lineitems table i cannot enter any data. i guess i am 95% there any clues to what i am missing. thanks
mr_vodka Posted November 17, 2006 Posted November 17, 2006 1. Are your fields setup to be allowed to be entered in the field behavior settings? 2. In the relationship between the PO and the line items table, have you set it up to Allow creation fo reacords in the line items table?
RT Posted November 17, 2006 Author Posted November 17, 2006 YES YES thank you for your patience Mr Vodka all is working well thanks to you, the paint is finally appearing on the canvas. and i am understanding the language much better now just to get rid of the angry fruit salad :wink2:
