We have a bit of a problem. Our Filemaker Pro unlimted Is crashing about once a veek. Only error message is this.

[08/May/2001:17:24:46 +0200] An exception has occurred!!!.

[08/May/2001:17:24:46 +0200] Most likely FMPro ran out of memory for this request.

[08/May/2001:17:24:46 +0200] Try relaunching FMPro with more memory.

We are using FMserver --> FMunlimitet --> ISS5.0web connector compination.

Our web sites have about 45 000 visitors per month. On best days about 4500 visitors. How much can filemaker handel. How can we test it?

The unlimed is allso sharing one database with filemakers host sharing to one of our clients. Could this make our filemaker to crash?

FMserver, FMunlimited, ISS5.0 web connector, every of those are on seperate machines. FMserver is on WIN2000server, Unlimted is on WIN2000pro and vebconnector is on WIN2000 server.

Machines are:

FMserver; Pentium 800mzh, ide raid1, 256mb of memory

40 magabytes cache for FMserver

FMunlimited; pentium 500mzh, ide raid1, 256 mb of memory

9,9 cache megabytes for FMpro

Web connector; pentium 500mzh, 256 mb of memory

plenty of free memory.

There are 29 databases on FMproUnlimited containing about 80 000 records. (total)

And don't worry if u can't get NT box set anymore......MS runs a system where you can buy Win NT media kit (just CD) and run it under Win 2000 licences.........MS obviously know how many problems people are having with Win 2000!!!!!

Windows NT saved my productivity (I was working 8 years exclusively on Mac, and new systems from Apple get fragile) and I cannot praise them (NT) enough. We are now mixed, 30% Macs, 50% NT and the rest W'98.

Our Head of IT is totally against W2K. He is running test after test, and he founds more and more problems.

Yes! We are trying now Another W2k server. We moved our FMunlimeted(W2K pro to W2K server) to new intallation on W2K server. Everyting seems to be a bit of faster and system is quite stable now.... (faster alltought W2K server is slover computer)

Next week show's up if out new W2K server helps's on our situation....

Anatoli! What problems you have found with W2K server, pro? At our office W2K pro's seems to be more stable than any of out W98, mac or NT4.0 computers...

That is field of our MacOS and NT IT wizard. He is THE BEST here, and he just works for us almost unpaid, because we are trying new technologies and concepts. I am just happy when he recommends -- so you have this problem, switch to that -- and so it goes. He (Jarek) was always right for past 8 years.

He made me switch from MacOS to NT.

In his opinion and after extensive tests W2K are no good.

We are not upgrading, that is all.

I agree I am a die hard Mac user but I have to admit that if an application falls over on a Mac everything grinds to a messy halt!! (s**t memory management is just one of the reasons)

However I have to say in Macs defence that you will find it very hard to find a more secure system than WebSTAR and Lasso running on MacOS (if it is setup correctly of course with log access restrictions etc..) and if left to do it's thing (we have a seperate development server on our LAN) it doesn't fall over (our www server hasn't crashed of it's own doing for about six months and even when it did it was because I had set something incorrectly).

I like NT (we use it to run our call centres) although I think that for a beginner it can be a bit "over" complicated by this I mean the "depth" (clicks to get to) of some of the configuration dialog boxes is incredible.

I can agree on all points.

We made switch to NT because inadequate Mac memory handling and it is also much cheaper to run, maintain and upgrade Wintel over here. I was struggling with 10-15 applications running on Mac, no such problem on NT.

We don't like 95-98 gizmos. And as I've written -- we do not trust W2K.

The thing with Windows vs. Mac is simple:

On Mac try everything logical and it will work in about 98-99%.

On Windows you must try everything logical, which is giving 60-90% of success.

Then you must try to do everything illogical for the last 40-10% functionality.

On a Mac server, if FM Server is clicked to the background speed really suffers. This foreground/background problem can be solved with a freeware Mac app called Peek-a-Boo (www.downloads.com). This app allows you monitor the processor utilization and force priorities. We've had good results with on OS's as new as 9.0.4. -bd

Yep, We tryed out W2K server on our Unlimited machine. Everyting seemed to work out fine..... Exept yesterday, there were the same eror massage waiting me. Now it seemed like that unlimted crashed on hevy load. On Friday we had about 5000 visitors, our web sites, when unlimted crashed.

I had a peek at alpha (is that the correct v. before beta?) some months ago.

Anyway I am looking forward to 5.5 unlimited, how that will travel under heavy load.

We are not using Filemaker scripts. Scripts will not work on our load. Can we use scripts with FMU5.5? Will there be any differenties?

Posted

Timo,

the 5.5 will be multithreaded. I am still against scripts.

Did you have chance to try FM on NT? We have uptime around 100%.

NT4 sp6 IIS and FM unlimited.
