Is there a way to make a script that will use a inputed date on a field and when that date comes up send a email to a given address?

I would like to set reminders if possible -- not sure if this is the best way to do it but if anyone has any other ways to make auto reminders please let me know.

I'm trying to do exactly the same as this. Is there no send email function only a script?

Is this still the best way to do this task as I don't really like the idea of installing 3rd part plug-ins unless absolutely necessary. I would presumably have to install the plugin on all client machines?
