mleiser Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 I'm beginning to move my FM files over to Server 9. I used to have an icon on each workstation that, when clicked on, would take you directly into a specific application and ask for your password. For exactly, to get into the day camp application, click on the day camp icon and you automatically go to the file for day camp where it asks for your password. Now that I use server, I open remote, and then open local or favorite hosts and click on the appropriate file. Is there a way to create an icon on the desktop that will automatically go to the server and open the particular file directly without the additional steps? Sorry for being so long winded on this one. Mike
Ted S Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 This is one of the most often asked questions. http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/189715
Steven H. Blackwell Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 [color:red]Be sure that you do NOT create an OS file sharing level shortcut to do this. Steven
mleiser Posted April 11, 2008 Author Posted April 11, 2008 Thanks. I like the one line shortcut best. One question on that. When it says fmp7://10.20.30.40/filename.fp7 what does the fmp7: stand for and is it different if I'm using fm9? Hope this isn't a really stupid question, but I've been using FM since V1 but just starting with server. Thanks.
mleiser Posted April 11, 2008 Author Posted April 11, 2008 Boy, I'm really feeling ignorant today. Could you explain what it is you're saying? Mike
mr_vodka Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 He means that dont create a shortcut like you could normally do with anything else in Windows such as by right clicking and using "Create shorcut". Basically, go through the FM Network rather than directly to where the file exists.
Ted S Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 Okay, I'll break the shortcut down into segments for ease of explanation. The shortcut: fmp7://10.20.30.40/FileName.fp7 fmp7 Is a special protocol that Filemaker uses to communicate with the server. FM versions 7, 8, 8.5, and 9 all use the fmp7 protocol. 10.20.30.40 Is the IP address of your Filemaker server. You could use the server's name instead of the IP address if you prefer that method. For instance if your server was named HARVEY you could use this syntax: fmp7://HARVEY/FileName.fp7 FileName.fp7 Is the name of the Filemaker database file that you want to connect to. Hope this helps.
mleiser Posted April 14, 2008 Author Posted April 14, 2008 Thanks, I'll try it on Monday. Appreciate the help. Mike
mleiser Posted April 14, 2008 Author Posted April 14, 2008 Tried in on my workstation and I can't get out of the properties box of the shortcut because it doesn't recognize it. I must be doinf something wrong. I took any shortcut, duplicated it, and changed the command line to the fmp7://ip/filename. Was that right? Mike
mr_vodka Posted April 14, 2008 Posted April 14, 2008 Try this. Right click on the desktop. Selected New --> Shortcut. Put in the fmp7://FMS_IP_Address/YourFile.fp7
oleung Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 (edited) How does this work with the Mac environment? I cannot make this work. Thanks Edited December 3, 2009 by Guest
Mikey79 Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 It's more a URL shortcut than a windows "shortcut"
oleung Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 Great, will try. I recall when i type the URL in Safari and press enter with something like below fmp7://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/filename.fp7 Filemaker program actually being called out and disappear in a few seconds without the database be openeed, but it works under Windows XP. Any clues.
