March 14, 200916 yr Twitter question from DillionSG ramping up on Filemaker Pro 10. Steep curve. But how to make a field object read only in a layout? Still poking and prodding away. Any tips? Option 1: Merge field - While editing a layout go to "Insert" "Merge Field" (Ctrl-M on windows) Option 2: Edit the field behavior to not allow being entered in browse mode. Nice thing here is you can set it to be entered in Find mode so they can search by the field but not edit it. Option 3: By security roles - little advanced, don't have time to go into it, but could be setup and used eventually. Kevin
March 14, 200916 yr The problem with this approach, Kevin, I mean answering someone's twitter question here on FM Forums, is that we do not know DillionSG's OS or FM version. If the person posting used FM10, we might include script triggers as well. And not all answers apply to every platform and FM version. I assume you posted the answer here because you thought others might have the same question? In this case, it is nice of you indeed although a simple search here could have also provided the same responses. But if it was to only use Stephen's Twitter feature here to respond back to the person, I wonder if it is the best way to handle it? If DillionSG would have said to ME, "Still poking and prodding away. Any tips?" then my answer would have been simply "Join FM Forums so you can truly learn FileMaker and not poke and prod alone and potentially be given bad information. Here on FM Forums, we catch each other. I am unsure how much interaction you would get on Twitter." I'm just asking because I've never seen a post such as this, I don't use Twitter, and it leaves Dillion still wandering the world alone trying to understand FileMaker. I'd love other's perspective as well. LaRetta
March 14, 200916 yr Author That is a good point LaRetta. Stephen Dolenski had responded to Dillion on Twitter that FmForums was a good place to go for help. Dillion's response was sure I will check it out but he thought he would get a quicker response on Twitter. Since I did give a short not complete response on twitter because of the 140 character limit, I thought this post would be a good example of why you can get better more complete answers using FMForums, and I thought using the twitter button would be a great way to tie the two together. I was only trying to promote the traffic back to FMForums. Kevin
March 14, 200916 yr I guess I'd better get up to speed on tweets and twitters, Kevin! And ANY assistance with FileMaker (no matter where or how) is still wonderful. I appreciate you enhancing the communication. I just wish I could have "seen" the person posting - here on FM Forums, we're so used to having direct connection with someone and the sidebar showing their self-rating, number of posts, OS and platform are key factors in our response to them. Thanks for the input on it! Edited March 14, 200916 yr by Guest
March 14, 200916 yr Laretta look at the menu bar at the top "Twitter Feed" you can see every topic posted via twitter with the them FileMaker in it :
March 14, 200916 yr Dang! How long as that been there? ROFLMAO! I had seen the Tweet this Post on the sidebar and went to the link but it seemed one must be registered. And since I didn't chirp, I saw no reason to tweet. But I missed the Twitter Feed, Stephen! Yeah, I've been a bit busy lately. :blush2:
