June 27, 200916 yr I am admittedly are real newbie to FMP 7. That said, I have created a new FMP 7 file. It has three tables (Names, Traps and Donations). I have an Excel file that contains the donation data, and I have converted it to a FMP 7 file. I want to import the data from the converted file into my new database, but when I try, the only fields I can see are the ones from the Names table, not the Donation table. I have attached the two files in question. If a password is asked for, user name is John and P/W is Gracie. I could sure use some help here. FixNation_DB.zip Donation_File.zip
June 27, 200916 yr I'm having no luck opening the attachments. However, to import data you need to be on a layout that is based on a table occurrence for the table that you want to populate. So, if it is Names that you are importing, go to a layout based on a Names table occurrence. Then choose import records. Switch to Traps layout and import trap data.
June 28, 200916 yr Author Not sure why you can't open these files - I am using Stuffit 11 - I tried to use .sit, but it will only give me .sitx (not acceptable per forum rules) - anyway, here is another attempt. Fix_Nation_DB.zip Donation_File.zip
June 28, 200916 yr I can't open your attachments either. Anyway, when you import from a Filemaker file, there will be a drop-down above the list of source fields, allowing you to select the source table.
June 28, 200916 yr Author Let me restate my problem. When I try to import records from the Donation File to the Fix Nation DB file, the right hand side of the import window offers only those fields that are in the NAMES table. There is now way to show the fields in the DONATIONS table. I have a new copy of Stuffit, and hope that the attached files can be opened OK. Again,if a password is asked for, it is Gracie. Thanks again for your patience and time. John Fix_Nation_DB.fp7.zip Donation_File.fp7.zip
June 28, 200916 yr Hi John, Why buy Stuffit? You can choose zip as an archive in the drop down window (RIght Button or Control Mouse). If it doesn't default to zip, if I recall correctly in Panther you could pick a compaction format (i.e. sit or zip). The sit option was latter dropped (TIger I think) so that is the only choice now is zip. The sit format had problems, so we advised Mac users to choose the zip format. Anyway, I couldn't access your files using Gracie, either as the "Account Name" or "Password", or any combination of Admin with it. Lee Edited June 28, 200916 yr by Guest
June 28, 200916 yr Author My fault again. The user name is John, and the password is Gracie. I am attaching another copy of the Donation File with the same user/password. I can't believe how patient you are being - thank you SO MUCH! Donation_File_10-19-17.fp7_2.zip
June 28, 200916 yr I'm not sure of your question, I see both TOs in your "Fix Nation", and those in the "CN FN Donors 2" You do realize that at the top, you can open the different TOs by pulling down the TO names on both sides? Let me know if this isn't what you mean. Lee
June 28, 200916 yr Author Maybe I am doing something wrong. I go to the Fix Nation DB file and select Import Records from the Donations File. This opens a window with the fields from table CN FN Donors on the L/H side and the fields from the table Names on the R/H (Target) side. The field names I want to import into are in table Donations in the Fix Nation DB file, but I cannot see a way to change the fields on the R/H side to see these.
June 28, 200916 yr When I try to import records from the Donation File to the Fix Nation DB file, the right hand side of the import window offers only those fields that are in the NAMES table. There is now way to show the fields in the DONATIONS table. As Barbara explained earlier, in order to import into DONATIONS you need to go to a layout of DONATIONS first (this limitation, BTW, has been removed in the corresponding script step). You cannot import into two tables at the same time, so if you are importing into NAMES, fields from other tables are not available for selection as target.
June 28, 200916 yr Author If I read you, I should be in the Donations table. When I go to that table all the fields (that I placed there from the fields I defined for the Donations Table) say . This must be where I have gotten confused, but I do have a Donations table, and it does have the proper fields defined. Have you looked at my Relationship Graph? Have I screwed up there?
June 28, 200916 yr If I read you, I should be in the Donations table. When I go to that table all the fields (that I placed there from the fields I defined for the Donations Table) say . Because the layout, although named "Donations", is set to show records from the Names TO. BTW, the relationship between Donations and Names is missing a matchfield on the Donations side - but that is not the issue here.
June 28, 200916 yr You are mixing up Relationship and Importing. The Relationship has been changed, where the fields are showing "Missing" However, the import into the "CN FN Donors 2" Table worked okay. Lee
June 28, 200916 yr Author What you sent looks to me just like my existing file. I think it is time to quit and regroup. I think I will try and re-read Michael Harris' Key Concepts paper again tomorrow, then maybe I can come back and ask again later? Thanks again for your forbearance.
June 29, 200916 yr Author Good Morning Lee I tried the files you sent yesterday, and it worked the first time I tried it. But when I tried to delete the imported files and try it a second time it did just what my original ones did. Of course I was too dumb to make a copy first. I think I was beginning to get a glimmer, but now I need to look at your files first. Could you please re-send the RetFiles folder? Thanks, John
June 29, 200916 yr Hi John, just re-download the ones that are there. Lee Edited June 29, 200916 yr by Guest
