I am new to filemaker server. We are getting ready to purchase it.

I would like to know if the server gives each user thier own "found set" to work with, or if the found set is just one instance across all users.

For example, if user X does a find for part 123 and user Y does a find for part 456 - both at the same time, does each get a found set with thier own part, or is there one found set listing BOTH parts?

We have a series of parts that users will be searching and adding to thier found set and printing a layout on them - so I need to confirm each user will be able to print thier own finds without it mixing in with other users.

thanks.

Well you can impose FileMaker record level permissions where each user can see records that are flagged as owned by that user, either by their account name or some other criteria.

Much of the permissions happens at the client's end, when each user performs a find across, the entire found set.

When each user performs a find each user will result in the found set based on the searched criteria.

If each record is marked or flagged with some value that is included with each search each user will be able to retrieve those sets of records every time - if you wish to restrict user X from viewing or modifying user Y's records, you will need to use the permissions to enforce such restriction.

Each user works with their own "found set" - as such the user experience is as though it was their own database.

This has nothing to do with FM Server. Each user has his/her own local temp copy of the file when connecting. Be aware however that you can have record locking if two users are trying to edit the same record simultaneously.

Maybe read up some on FMS before deploying it.
