Newbies commandd Posted November 25, 2009 Newbies Posted November 25, 2009 (edited) Hi, running filemaker pro 7 on a mac for the last 8 years or so, just had a clients details disappear, so the many many jobs now just have a blank in the client rather. Obviously I can re-input their details and reinstate their name on all the jobs, but is there an easier way, or is the client actually still there but I cannot see it? thanks sheldon [color:blue]FMS on OS X Information would have been available if the post hadn't been moved. jamesducker Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 It depends why it "disappeared". The most likely cause of the disappearance is deletion of the client record, which would be consistent with the jobs having a blank client name. Deletions in FileMaker are basically permanent; there is no magic "undo" feature. You could re-input the details, the "easier way" being to revert to a backup. Yours James
Newbies commandd Posted November 25, 2009 Author Newbies Posted November 25, 2009 Hi James, thanks for your reply, but no-one has deleted the contact details? regards sheldon
IdealData Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Has the relationship key field in the Client record been emptied or modified?
David McQueen Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Hi James, thanks for your reply, but no-one has deleted the contact details? regards sheldon It sounds like the problem is in your client keys, either the prime key in the client table or the client key in your jobs table. 1. Find an errant job record and check to see if the client key is there. If so, also check in the client table to see if the prime key for that client is there. If not, you know some keys were deleted. then it is a matter of replacing them ( easier said than done). 2. If the keys are there, next check another relationship to client, with one of the errant clients, and see if the client data shows. This would indicate that the client prime key in and of itself is not damaged. 3. If the client prime key appears OK, go back to your jobs table. Try resetting the index in the client key. I believe if you go into the field definitions and make that field unstored and then make it stored, indexing all, that will cause the index to be rebuilt. I had a similar thing happen several years ago. It turned out that they had had a massive storm and the damage was in the key in the child file. Good luck
Newbies commandd Posted November 25, 2009 Author Newbies Posted November 25, 2009 hi, not sure what this is, complete novice, we never go into the working, we just use the front end?
Newbies commandd Posted November 25, 2009 Author Newbies Posted November 25, 2009 thanks, but unfortunately I have no idea how to do any of this
David McQueen Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 You need someone who knows what they are doing to go into your program. If it was done by an outside developer, it is probably time to give them a call. If it was done in house, hopefully whoever did it is still with the company and can go in. Failing that, you need someone in the area to go it and hopefully you have the full access account and password for the program. The responses you have received will give them a clue on where to look hopefully.
Newbies commandd Posted November 25, 2009 Author Newbies Posted November 25, 2009 thanks - thought that may be the case
bcooney Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 This often is the case when the Client Name or phone number is used as a key, rather than a unique number. This is, of course, bad design. Your first task is to discover what is used as a key to relate the two tables.
Lee Smith Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 (edited) It sounds like the file has become corrupted to me. Is this file being shared? If so, how. i.e. Peer to Peer, FileMaker Server, Web? [color:red]Yes [color:blue]FMS on OS X How many times has the file been closed improperly, i.e. loss of power, freeze and reboot ? How sure are you that it was just one Client information? Lee Edited November 25, 2009 by Guest adjust my answer
