January 12, 201016 yr I'm a filemaker user/developer with a small 3 Mac network which has been running without issue for years. I upgraded a machine recently to a new Imac Intel core 2 duo (as I do every couple of years) and as per usual, transferred all applications from the old to the new machine including FMPro 10.0v3. On the new machine FM launched OK and opened the FM application on a linked machine but most (but not all) of the portals are not working (only) on the new machine. In Layout mode on the new machine none of the field names are visible. In the portals on the new machine there are dotted outlines where the fields should be and double clicking these will correctly open linked files. Anybody seen this before or have any solutions? Do I have to install FM from scratch on the new machine? This will be difficult because my last disk which was not an upgrade was eons ago. Grateful for any suggestions. SB
January 12, 201016 yr Sounds like a file references problem (this is a multi-file solution, correct?) Check out File>Manage>External Data Sources. When you say "linked machine" what do you mean? Are you opening a solution on one machine (the Host) and using File>Open Remote on the other two (as guests)?
January 13, 201016 yr Author Yes that's right - I'm opening a session on a host machine by using the process you describe. I'm a little flummoxed because I've done the upgrade machine thing several times in the last ten years (using Apple's migration tool and a firewire cable) and never struck this problem. SB
January 13, 201016 yr I encountered a situation similar to this recently. A FM user recently got a new Mac and migrated their account with the Migration Assistant. When attempting to view files hosted on our FM Server one of the tables was not visible in certain layouts. This was a multi-file solution and thus I checked to be sure that the external file references were correct (they were). The user then noticed some problems with MS Office documents so she decided to do a clean install of the OS. That solved the problem but I don't know what caused it.
January 14, 201016 yr Author Some further notes: 1. I reinstalled FM10 - no change. 2. I then installed a copy of the remote FM database on the new iMac - still the same problem viewing some of the tables. 3. In this copy on the new iMac when I type in find mode the text is not visible - is this an OS-FM interaction problem? 4. In the new copy the field names are also not visible in layout mode - if in layout mode I insert a field from either the parent or child tables the newly inserted (but not the old) fields are now visible Perhaps I should do a clean reinstall of the System and try again? Thanks SB
January 14, 201016 yr Are the Fonts installed that are used in the file. Sounds line a Font ID or missing font. Just a guess. Lee
January 14, 201016 yr Reinstalling FM didn't work for us either. Is it specific to a particular User account?
January 15, 201016 yr Author The fonts used is Arial so nothing exotic. We only have one user account - no security for a small intranet with 3 people. I'll try a clean reinstall of the system
January 17, 201016 yr Author So my problem does seem related to fonts - when I substitute something other than arial - (even another arial family font) it works both when using the database locally or on the remote machine. But arial was OK in other programs Word; TextEdit etc. This seems the symptom of something much deeper than a font so I've done an erase and reinstall of the system and all is well now. Perhaps something to do with migrating from an older G5 to a newer intel iMac? Thanks for everyone's contribution. SB
