I have a database site based on web companion and CDML. In the near future I may be required to go to Lasso. However, I don't want to convert all at once (maybe convert the site part by part). Is it possible that Lasso can interpret CDML pages as they are? If that is the case then I can convert some pages and let it run all the pages until the rest are converted. Can Lasso interpret CDML as is?

There is LDML, the Lasso tags. The pages will need only slight changes to some of the tags, i.e.,-database (in FMP) and -db (in LDML)

I believe that it is best to change the entire site at once.

I agree with the previous post that if you are converting to LDML it is better to do so all at once, rather than in sections...to avoid problems. Lasso does indeed understand all CDML commands through a built-in converter cgi that comes with the program. So you can, in effect run both CDML and LDML at the same time both through Lasso (pretty convenient, huh.)

Thanks Jeff...sounds great. I didn't know that Lasso comes with a built in convertor for CDML. Yes I agree that it is better to go all at once. But I have a time constraint. And it is only one part of the site that is a problem in CDML, that I may need need need to convert to lasso. The rest of the site is good. Hmm....I'll have to give this some thought.

Why change to Lasso? Is it better than Web Companion?

Yes in a sense. Lasso is supposed to be more robust and secure than regular CDML and Web Companion. It also provides certain features that CDML/Web Companion doesn't.

What extra features?

I was just talking with a server admin guy (who knows nothing of FMP) he's setting up a machine for somebody else with Lasso.

"Why Lasso?" I asks him.

"I asked them what was wrong with Web Companion, too." he replies (so he knows a bit about FMP after all)

Apart from Lasso being "unlimited" (is that a valid assumption?) what extra features are there? I've been using FMP4 and WC for years, I have no complaints. But am I missing out on something?

Thanks.

Hey Vaughn!

I've read on BlueWorld's site that the Web Companion is, in fact, a "limited" version of Lasso and utilizes a subset of the complete Lasso commands (albeit with a slightly different syntax). I'm currently investigating what exactly are the differences in that I am looking at developing a Flash site and can currently only find the commands to communicate with Lasso and not Web Companion....hmmmmm. The journey continues. I'll post when I have further news!!!
