Interstingly, according to wikipedia the character is old: it dates back to the middle ages.

It's the same as Char (13). In a text editor, you'd probably use r.

I think he means that in Ms Word, the pilcrow is used to show carriage returns when the show invisible character option is enabled (and the pilcrow is the icon used to toggle the option).
