by Matt Petrowsky 16 minutes Article options Watch Preview Video Watch Full Version Download Technique File Download Movie File You really can't afford to keep doing the same things over and over again. Yet, this may be exactly where you're stuck. What you really need is "Developer Thinking"! It's a mindset regarding your approach to your immediate issue. Deciding to spend some extra time crafting a solution which will solve the problem, and at the same time, fit a variety of other situations. Using the simple example of wrapping field values with inner HTML table tags, I reveal that spending that extra amount of time generates a much more power…

by Matt Petrowsky 25 minutes Article options Watch Preview Video Watch Full Version Download Technique File Download Movie File Function Scripting Video Working with dates within FileMaker can be a confusing topic if you've not dealt with them before. Knowing how to extract a range of dates complicates this matter further. I remember my first try with mastering dates (especially trying to make a calendar in FileMaker version 3) and it took a few days to get them down, I just couldn't get into the whole "it's all seconds" thing - but eventually I got it. The great thing about this video is that you'll never need to be confused again. This video…

While at FileMaker Devcon 2008, I had the pleasure of meeting with a new contributor to the world of FileMaker. His name is Michael Gaslowitz and he's got some really great content. He has released a number of videos recently, some which are Mac specific, but one in particular is a great technique which you should be aware of if you're using portals and showing a limited set of data. Why should you know about this technique? Because it's something you'll come across if performance and data quantity become an issue when using FileMaker's resizable windows. Here is a direct link to his posting and I've also added his other videos as well! Thanks for making the contributio…

It’s the question which has been popping up within the FileMaker community lately. While I can’t be long on details, I can acknowledge that a conflict of interest has caused the recent redirect from zipptools.com to FileMaker’s website. The plugin is no longer available at the zipptools website but we felt it was a shame that the author had to make such a drastic change. You can still get a copy of the most recent version (both Windows and Mac) at this link http://www.filemakermagazine.com/plugins/zippscript.html While I’m unsure if any future versions will be supported or released, this is not a reason to stop using script triggering plug-ins by any means. True, zipp…

by Matt Petrowsky 11 minutes Article options Watch Full Version Download Technique File Download Movie File Wow! It's not 1999 anymore! Ok, so maybe you've just now realized this and you're deciding it's time to keep up on the news in a more efficient fashion. Well, if you not taken a look at using an RSS reader then maybe you should start. Here's some incentive, start with making it easier to digest all the possible FileMaker news that's out there. In this video I show you how I do it. I use the wonderful online reader from Google.com. Attached to this article is an OPML file which you can import into any reader you might use. Enjoy the news! We were in my office messing around and I said "Hey, lets talk about the Devcon sessions". That's how it all started. We (Stephen Dolenski and myself -Matt Petrowsky) sat down and simply talked about the topics to be covered at the 2008 Devcon for FileMaker. Knowing nothing about their actual content (we're guessing on most), and more about who was offering it, we talk about pretty much every session. If you've got an hour and fifteen to kill, then pop your ear canals open for a bit and take a listen. It's an MP3, so you'll have to download (sorry no iTunes yet), but it may be worth it. You may even find a few FileMaker tips in there. This was just for fun and n…

PHP is one of the most prevalent technologies on the web today. In fact, FileMaker Inc. made the move to integrate PHP as one of the supported technologies for accessing FileMaker data over the web. This video, however, is about using PHP right from within FileMaker. It has nothing to do with the web and everything about how you can extend what FileMaker can do. In the video, I cover the pervasive desire of being able to email straight from within a FileMaker database. By using the SmartPill PHP plug-in, you can access a variety of class libraries which allow you to do all kinds of things within FileMaker. If you're not afraid of scary looking code, and you're itchin…

Not everyone who opens a copy of FileMaker is going to know how to search for the records they're seeking. FileMaker's Query by Form method of searching leaves a few users hunting around for clues as to how they might perform their slightly-beyond-basic search request. Fortunately, we can automate the process of more complex searches. This can be accomplished by scripting the search process. Another side of the search coin is the whole web search engine thing. One field and a ton of results. Didn't get what you want? Search again and change what you asked for - or how you asked for it. In this video I present a highly powerful technique for m…

FileMaker 8.5 New Features Overview by Matt Petrowsky Size: 59.17MB Length: 50:44 Minutes Files: FMP85Details.zip ( 32 KB ) Synopsis: Shortly after FileMaker, Inc. released the new FileMaker 8.5, I "rushed out" and purchased, (if you consider buying a copy online "rushing") my copy of the new version. The next thing I did was use one of my template files to start going through the new features. While the list isn't a big one, the few features they add each time, especially those geared towards developers, makes the environment that much easier to create solutions. Without having spent too much development time with each feature, I want…

TOPIC: Ultimate Portal Sorting Updated Two of the most requested features for portals are likely horizontal scrolling and being able to sort individual columns. The former is something far out of your control, yet the later is something you can accomplish with a bit of creativity. In this video, you'll learn every detail you need to know in order to sort a portal on any column, in either direction, using any field type and supporting multiple languages! This truly is Ultimate Portal Sorting. The technique only requires one additional field for each table with data presented in a portal, and uses one …

NEW VIDEO RELEASE: TOPIC: Using Arrays in FileMaker When it comes to the concept of programming, you may not think FileMaker is something you program in. It's not like a language such as Pascal or C, yet few FileMaker developers know what any good programmer knows. Making a database system in FileMaker is programming. You're creating a useable system, using logic, based on the features and limitations of the environment you're provided. Learning an environment or language is merely one part of the whole equation. Knowing how to manipulate and use data structures is another part. It applies to any program…
