Ahhh, so if the DB isn't password protected = no problem. Bummer. I applied the only patch on FM Web site, no change.

I noticed that when I double-click a FileMaker v5.5 database that resides on the Desktop of my OS X client computer, it launches FM but doesn't open the database. If I place an alias of a database on the Desktop and move the database to a nested folder, works fine. Anyone else notice this Desktop No Launch issue?

Please advise if I understand correctly: Disconnect feature in Server is completely separate and does not rely upon or reference the disconnect feature in the document preferences. Assuming I understand correctly, what is the idle time when a database is shared by FileMaker Pro and not Server?
-
v5.5 Server for Mac seems pretty straight forward on using the Disconnect Idle Guests feature. Can anyone tell me how it relates to the _Disconnect from FileMaker Server when idle_ feature/checkbox at the password level for the database? More specifically, must the password level feature be turned on in order for the Server Disconnect Feature to engage? The help info for this topic appears to confuse the word guest and database constantly making it very difficult to understand.

Running FM Svr 5.5 on Mac OS 9.1. Launch FM Pro client on same box, click Hosts - should I be able to access dbs hosted on the same computer that I am running the client on? I currently cannot.

I too have been doing the File:Open solution. Below is the word from FM, Inc.,: Here's the deal: FileMaker Pro 5.5 for OS 8/9 was not designed to run in classic mode under OS X. It was not tested or certified for this, and it is not recommended. If this customer wants to use FileMaker when booted into either OS on the same machine, he should install FMP twice. Install the OS X version when booted under OS X, and the OS 8/9 version when booted under OS 9. To avoid the file association problem he is reporting, I recommend launching the FMP application first, then using the Open command to open the desired database. This is the general feeling I am getting from companies about Classic support, it is most unfortunate.

I deleted the X version and association under v9 is working now. Would still like to know if you must have both versions installed in order to move between OS versions and if these two problems are known.

Installed OS 10.1.2 and when I launched the OS 9 native version of FMPro v5.5 instead of it opening it classic, it just crashes. I then installed the OS X native version and all was fine. However, like most intelligent sys admins, after I experimented for exposure, I went back to OS 9. Now when I double-click a FMPro db on my desktop, it produces a bogus error about incorrect installation, missing system components and insufficient memory. If I launch FMPro and do a File:Open, no problems. Obviously the OS X version is causing the OS 9 version to misbehave. Anyone know if this is a known issue or am I special and will have to deal with it accordingly?

The practice of using an auto-created serial number as a unique record number for each record is one of those things I have always taken for granted. Being a systems administrator and not a database designer, I am finding it difficult to explain in basic terms to a new database designer why EVERY database should have a unique record number. The FileMaker Bible claims they are great for invoicing, and I know I have databases that rely on them for filling in fields via relationships, but I know there is a 1 - 2 sentence explanation on why it is ALWAYS a good practice. Can anyone help me out here?

Just to clarify, if I take advantage of having ScriptMaker sniff out my last Find and automatically plug it into a new script, that I will not be able to modify it in the future? Seems like a deficiency easily solved, too bad if I understand correctly. At least there is a workaround.

I perform a find for Mary in a name field. I create a new script and call it Find Mary. The script works. In ScriptMaker I go to edit the script and the line reads Perform Find [Restore]. I print the script and I see Perform Find [Request 1: First Mary]. I looked everywhere before posting this question, so please forgive me: Why can't I see the details in ScriptMaker and more importantly how do I edit the variable Mary in the future?

John - Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for. <<By "dynamic site" I mean the whole site is built off Filemaker database contents for instantaneous updates, structure changes, etc.>> If I understand correctly, in a nutshell, HTML pages are created that are basically skeletons, hosted via Apache or the like, and that a software solution dynamically takes advantage of FileMaker database(s) to fill in the fields?

Follow up - I noticed when opening a database today that the windoid title was Today Calculation. It preceeded to calculate something prior to opening the database. I can find no mention of Today Calculation in the FileMaker Pro v5 Bible. Anyone know if this is a normal FileMaker routine that gets triggered by a particular threshold and if so what that threshold is?

Rebooted the server today and still have two databases that end in underscore showing up as Hosted when Pro clients click the Host button. 1) Do I need to change the database to Multi-User/Hidden once to satisfy some part of Server? 2) Is it normal for databases that are selected as Single User in Sharing to show up as Multi-User when hosted by the Server?

I checked out a number of the Current Clients and only saw basic Web pages, no obvious databases with searchable records, pull-downs, radio buttons and the like.

Can anyone provide a URL that points to a hosted FileMaker database that is open to the public? I mean a really excellent one. I would love to see some examples of what is possible so I can in turn show my supervisor and get funds to make our databases Web-accessible. I have hosted a super basic database and was very impressed with the quality. But....I then hosted one of our more complicated dbs and it was a garbled mess.

Anatoli - I reread your message regarding Multiple User/Hidden thinking AHA! I just need to change the sharing to get the database to not show up as Hosted. However, I discovered it has no impact; all of my other databases that end with underscore are Single user when opened locally under Pro, and Multi User when hosted. This brings up another question: Is it normal for the Sharing state to show Multi-User for all Hosted databases?
-
FYI - We recently changed the names of two hosted databases to include the underscore at the end of the name in order to hide them from clients. We re-hosted the newly named files and they show up in the hosted files list for Pro clients. I am hopeful that a reboot of the server will flush out this problem that appears to be a bug.

I haven't experienced anything. Can you elaborate?

I have noticed that when some of my databases are opened, they occasionally begin a sort process, keyword occasionally. While there may be a script causing this, I wondered if this might be a standard thing for FileMaker when a particular threshold is tripped. The databases I use were inherited and I am not a FileMaker expert, so I will dig deeper in an attempt to locate a custom sorting script that is being triggered, but if anyone can save me time by letting me know if this is normal behaviour for FM, I would appreciate it.

After migrating to v5, I noticed all dbs with a name ending in underscore ("_") do not show up as hosted databases. Databases requiring information from these hosted databases perform with no problem. Is the hidden/non-hosted attribute a bug or feature?

There is a no password access level. The "try default password" box was not checked, but when checked you simply are not provided with the password prompt and end up getting the same scenario - no access. I would like to receive a password prompt without holding down the Option key when selecting the hosted database and be able to press Return for limited access. Again, the curious thing is this database behaves properly when used with the Pro client directly.
-
Just converted 32 databases from v4 to v5 and am hosting them with v5 server. All are functioning fine except one. The problem db comes up asking for a password and if one is not provided you can't get in. The same db opened with Pro locally will let you in without a password. I will research password configurations in general, but hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Is Lasso a product created by BlueWorld or is it a standard that BlueWorld adheres to?

Thanks for responses. Both responses suggesting having a 3rd computer for the Web. I am not sure what you both mean by this. Verio hosts my domain and my Web site. I was thinking I would simply have a link on my Web site that pointed to the Unlimited box. Is Verio the 3rd computer that you both refer to, or do I need a 4th computer performing something specific for FMPro that Unlimited and Server and Verio are not providing?
