jmirandav Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 Dear sirs: I wouls like your opinion, I have a request to port a FileMaker solution that handles the complete movement and operations of a national airline, to work via Web. Can this be done?. The real problem is mastering FM, or mastering software such as GoLive, DreamWeaver, etc?, or is a matter of knowing CDML (. Where can I find information?. Replies welcome.
Kurt Knippel Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 What is the point of moving it to the web? Does the entire solution need to be moved?
Garry Claridge Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 You can check Maria Langers book: "Database Publishing with Filemaker Pro on the Web" The web site is: http://www.marialanger.com/booksites/fmproweb.html Some other CDML tutorials may exist; check the Filemaker web-site. You should be able to do what you require with FM. All the best. Garry
Steve T. Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 "a FileMaker solution that handles the complete movement and operations of a national airline" So, this seems like a big FMP solution already that probably runs FMP Server with FMP clients? You'll probably need FMP-Unlimited for your web solution, or if you're project is complex or extremely active with many hits, you may need to learn/use other products (javascript, lasso, apache, php). Of course, this all depends on your tech level and the scale of the project (cf. captkurt, garrcl). As for Dreamweaver, Go Live, CDML, et al., you're talking about front end vs. back end. Back end and CDML you'll spend more time in a text editor or text editor mode of a web generator app hacking code. Front end (aesthetics/interface) is as simple or extensive as you want to make it. Good luck!
jmirandav Posted January 7, 2003 Author Posted January 7, 2003 The reason to move it to the web is an economic one. The price of a data line for transmition here is too high. The solution handles scheduling, reservations, and cargo.
jmirandav Posted January 7, 2003 Author Posted January 7, 2003 Thank you guys, The solutions although "big" will not have a great deal of hits, since the airline is a small one, with destinations in rural Bolivia and the 3 main cities, operating small planes doing passangers and cargo, as I told you in a previous post, the reason to modve to the web is the high price for the data transmission. All the confusion began with the prior idea I had, first I think that FMU publish and displays the information in the web, but now I see that the thing is making a site that "sees" the information published by FMU (Am I certain?). The question regarding Golive etc is that I have to decide rigth away wich software use for the development of the site, and begin (!) to learn CDML. Muchas gracias, Javier
Anatoli Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 I am using GoLive, but I do not like Adobe attitude at all. Macromedia is nicer company, but I couldn't work with Dreamwaver, it is from different world.
jmirandav Posted January 11, 2003 Author Posted January 11, 2003 Continuing in my search for the better way to port my solution to the Net I find wdata Builder 2.0, anyone have used this? I have made a small advance using HomePage with one of the databases but everything is still a little bit obscure. I
jmirandav Posted January 24, 2003 Author Posted January 24, 2003 Dear amigos: thank you for your help, I am writing you now to update about my work, due to the difficulties to port (in so little time) the complete solution to the web, I have designed a mixed "configuration", in which the databases are centralized in the main office and only certain databases available via the net. I still need to do some work in order to automate the processes and I'm looking to remote control software such as Timbuktu or something, maybe to order print jobs remotely etc. Thanks again, saludos Javier
