I have an environment where we are looking to upgrade from FMpro 4.1 clients and server. We have about 40 clients accessing shared databases being hosted by Fmpro Server.

I need to know if the following scenario is possible before outlaying the money.

We want to run FMPRO server 6 and host about 60 databases.

We also want to run FMPRO Unlimited on this Computer and run web companion to serve some of the databases via a web interface.

We want both WEB clients and Filemaker Pro version 6 clients to access the same databases at the same time.

is this possible??

Hi,

I asked a similar question recently and here are the replies I received

1)No problem - except it is Server 5.5 at the moment!

2)It is possible in theory to run FM Server and Unlimited on the same machine but not advisable. I tried this and have since bought a new machine to have the 2 split.

3) This is fine. The Database is opened in Unlimited and a shortcut to this database lies in the FM Server folder and so is hosted there as well.

On point 2, I really would advise you use seperate machines, performance from FM Server was greatly affected when I had the 2 hosting on the same machine. It sometimes got confused too as to what was hosting what to where, very strange things occured!

Regards

Ed.

This configuration is possible, except that FM Server and FM Unlimited must be on separate computers. FM Unlimited looks like any other client to FM Server. Simultaneous access to the files is no problem, it's just like your other 40 clients accessing server at the same time.

I was planning to use Apple Xserve as the hardware and I would have thought with the "grunt" available and MAC OSX.2 and the freebsd underlying OS, it could handle the FMPRO server, unlimited and web serving without any complaints...

Any comments?...

It does not matter what hardware and operating system you use, that is not the problem, it is FileMaker itself that gets confused when you run both Server and Unlimited on the same machine

IMHO -- that is primary problem. In theory it can and will run on NT and W2000, although it is bad concept.

Either one separately, will have just 50% chance to run on X without crashing *and* corrupting data. Read this forum smile.gif
