Do I need FM or FM Unlimited for e-commerce site?

Featured Replies

I've used FM to set up a handful of databases for my studio. Now I'm planning to set up an e-commerce site that would link to one -- a first for me! I would like to be able to gather a variety of marketing/profile data, as well as receive orders for a modest product line.

I'm currently using FM 5.5 and will be hosting the site and db on an OS X server. I realize that FM 5.5 only allows access for 10-12 unique IP address during a 12-hour period. However, the OS X server allows for unlimited client access.

Do I need to upgrade to FM Unlimited? Or is there a viable solution for the version I already have. I have just confused myself on this issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

OS X comes with PHP scripting. You can use this to talk to Filemaker to avoid the 12 IP limit.

All the best.

It is not question of "will it work", but "am I using FM software in accordance with license"?

According to FM license anybody using more than 10 IP in 12 hours period *must* use FM Unlimited.

Thanks, I certainly appreciate the feedback from both of you. I must admit, I never really considered the moral or ethical aspects of the FM license issue. But it's always good to receive a friendly reminder!

Thanks again!

Software piracy is one of the reasons why software prices are so high. However, I guarantee that if companies had a way of eradicating piracy, they would not lower prices.

In Australia FMU is $2200. So it is worthwhile squeezing as much out of sofware as you can, within the legal limits.

If you are using a web-application built with PHP and using Filemaker as the database engine, you may be using only one IP address. Whereas using FMU you would be using the WebCompanion to run the web-application and have direct access by many IP addresses.

Hope this sheds some light on the difference between web-applications.

All the best.

It is the same with Lasso. Also only single IP. But the license is clear -- Lasso users are bound to use Unlimited for web hosting.

BTW here FMU is 28 000 KCZ or 2800 good pint of beers smile.gif

Its 999 USD here, which is about... 915 euro??? Wow. That .916 exchange rate is great! In april it was like .6 I got jacked.

You have it hard Anatoli because it is only about 750 pints of beer here. Either that, or our beer is expensive frown.gif

All the best.

I love Black Swan and it wasn't expensive smile.gif

Beer in Czech Republic is almost the same price, like bottled water. Actually -- Perrier is more expensive, than our 2 premium beers: Budweiser and Pilsner.

Have nice one!

I am immensely grateful for these forums. I've had to learn the basics of creating an FM db on my own. And, while I feel I've done a fairly decent job thus far -- it's nice to know there is a collaborative and expert resource to turn to when I get myself in a jam!

Thanks for helping me better understand that whole IP thing, as well as the price of FM in beer around the world!! smile.gif

our 2 premium beers: Budweiser and Pilsner

It's funny to think that Budweiser is a "premium" beer in other countries. But I guess it would be an import... hahahah

Am I having a taste bud moment yet?

Gross. Anything with Bud in the name, count me out. Bring me a bock or a nice stout, a black and tan, anything but Bud.

Black n Tans, any ales, make me feel like crap in the morning. IMO, best beer - heffeweisen.

But I am on a gin and OJ kick now.

No, anatoli, never tasted that beer. Could you send me some? grin.gif

See how the US marketing destroys image of product? Some hundred years ago it was the same beer. The Czech one is still the same for last hundreds of years. Actually we are drinking beer more than 1000 years smile.gif

You can get it under the name of "Czechvar" at Trader Joe. Try also original Plisner Urquell. I saw it in SF on tap!

It's not the image that's destroyed. It's the flavor. I think urine has more healthy content and might taste better than Bud. (not that I've experimented or anything) And Bud Light is only worthwhile when you're already too drunk to taste much of anything. Good American beer is an oxymoron IMO. I'm very sorry if your Bud is the same or anything remotely similar.

Definitely it is not "remotely similar". There is nothing left from original Czech recipe. And image also get destroyed, you are confirming that smile.gif You think anything with "Bud" in the name is bad even without trying smile.gif

Mind you, Czechs are beer nation and all local beer is just the best standard frequently copied around the World. Why do you think so many beers are called "Pilsner"?

Pilsen is town in west Bohemia producing IMO best beer -- Pilsen Urquell -- in the World. My wife prefers Budweiser from Budweis town. We both enjoy Guinness as well.

From US beers I do like Samuel Adams and some local breweries in CA.

Those big breweries are producing just cow-urine. When Australian Foster was first imported into UK, it was good beer. Now? Some of the big ones got the license to brew it locally. IMHO -- such big company is producing only single so called "beer" and then it is filling different cans with it frown.gif Foster, Heineken, Stella Artois anything! Yak.
