danjacoby Posted September 15, 2003 Posted September 15, 2003 So here I am, with a Mac (yes, all you Windows types can razz me now) and an Access ".mdb" file, and no apparent way to import the data. Any suggestions?
Lee Smith Posted September 15, 2003 Posted September 15, 2003 Congradulations on your good sense for choosing the Mac There has been lots of discussion about this in the past, unfortunately it must have been on one of my other list that I belong to. I did find this thread here that may be helpful, in the mean time I'll do a search of the other lists and see what I can come up with. Click Here HTH Lee
danjacoby Posted September 16, 2003 Author Posted September 16, 2003 Thanks, but it's no help. The suggestion (exporting the Access file) can only be done on Windows with Access installed. I'm on a Mac.
BobWeaver Posted September 16, 2003 Posted September 16, 2003 What does .mdb stand for? Is it some kind of text format? If you can describe the format maybe someone will have some ideas. Oh, and consider yourself razzed.
kenneth2k1 Posted September 16, 2003 Posted September 16, 2003 .mdb is the extension given to MS Access files. I believe its a data format. I haven't tried just opening a .mdb file directly from FM, but I guess I could try. I am assuming the question asker has already tried it. If it doesn't work, how bout trying to open it w/ excel and changing the format?
kenneth2k1 Posted September 16, 2003 Posted September 16, 2003 Ok, you cant open it directly from Excel. It wants to create a database query. That part of Office wasnt installed on my PC, so forget it. Find a PC with Access and just go File/Export and save it as an excel file. If you like, you can send me the .mdb file and I can make it a spreadsheet. Ken
danjacoby Posted September 16, 2003 Author Posted September 16, 2003 I presume ".mdb" stands for "Microsoft Data Base". It's really disgusting that MS doesn't make their databases available for Mac, either directly by releasing a Mac version of Access, or indirectly by allowing Mac users to access the Access files. Is it because Access isn't ODBC-compliant, or just because MS is such an arrogant behemoth that they just don't give a d___?
kenneth2k1 Posted September 16, 2003 Posted September 16, 2003 It looks like it is ODBC-compliant. there is an MS Access driver in the ODBC Administrator (in Windows, that is). "Is it because MS is such an arrogant behemoth that they just don't give a d___?" Perhaps. But look. Mac monkeys complain that there is no MS Access for Mac, and they'd complain about Access if they DID make it for Mac. I guarantee it. "I can see there is no pleeeeaasing you"
Anatoli Posted September 16, 2003 Posted September 16, 2003 RE: Mac version of Access If there is market, M$ is there. In general Mac database users are counting for only maybe 5% from all Mac users and that is already taken by FM and 4D. My 2 cents.
