optisyen Posted September 17, 2003 Posted September 17, 2003 In order to "Replace" on the records, one should press " Ctrl + = " How can I open Replace window with or without using Shift key?
-Queue- Posted September 17, 2003 Posted September 17, 2003 '+' is 'and', not the sign. Press Ctrl and =.
Lee Smith Posted September 17, 2003 Posted September 17, 2003 Or, another way to say this to, look under the Menu - Records - Replace and be side it, it will tell you what the short cut keys are (Cmd = on a Mac) Lee
Vaughan Posted September 17, 2003 Posted September 17, 2003 The keyboard shortcuts are not always displayed in Windows, at least for systems I have worked on. Might be preference somewhere.
Lee Smith Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 I have never used FileMaker on Windows, so I don't have first hand knowledge of this. In fact, until you said it, I wasn't even aware that there were problems with shortcuts on Windows. In fact, I don't recall anyone ever saying this before on any of the 5 lists that I belong to. I have to admit though, that I do have a habit of scanning the Windows related problems. Might be nice to know which windows OS you are referring to, if you can recall them, please share with us. TIA Lee
-Queue- Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Well, it appears finding the shortcut wasn't the problem. It was using it correctly. Since = and + are on the same key and dependent upon Shift, optisyen was confused how to press Ctrl, +, and = simultaneously. Frankly, I might have been befuddled myself, if I didn't intuitively interpret the '+' to mean 'and'.
Lee Smith Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 hi Queue, I understood what you were saying okay, I was asking Vaughan to elaborate on the Window platform where he said the Shortcut Keys don't exist. Lee
-Queue- Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 That's cool, Lee. I was just clarifying, because it didn't seem like any of the other posts were directly related to the question, which did require a little reading in between the lines to discover. I wasn't directing the post at you in particular; I just didn't want there to be any confusion when optisyen reads the thread. I'm not sure about XP, but I know that on 98 or 2000 I haven't seen any issues with the shortcuts not being listed. 2000 only seems to have issues with the Alt underline shortcuts not appearing unless Alt is first pressed, which can get annoying if you don't have all the ScriptMaker ones memorized.
Lee Smith Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Hi Queue, A clarification on one of your points please. Were the Shortcut Keys shown in the Menu in all of these cases (if you can remember)? Whether or not some one can hit the keys in a proper manner in order to execute the shortcut, well, that is another whole different problem TIA Lee
optisyen Posted September 18, 2003 Author Posted September 18, 2003 My question and problem is filemaker is shown in menu but shortcut is not work..we use windows 2000 prof. Thanks.
Lee Smith Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 What keys are listed beside the Function in your menu?
-Queue- Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Yes, I've never seen a case of disappearing or missing menu shortcuts. Sounds spooky to me. Unfortunately, we can't push the keys for them, only explain how it's done and hope they don't accidentally execute the wrong one (Alt-F4, Ctrl-Q, etc.)
-Queue- Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Press Ctrl and = when in the field whose data is to be Replaced. If it's a calculation or a field disallowing modification, nothing will happen, as it should. Otherwise, the dialog box should open.
Lee Smith Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 BTW, if you are in a field that can not be altered, such as a calculation field, you will not be able to execute a Cmd (Ctrl) and = command. If you look in the Menu under Records - you will see that the function is grayed out. Lee
DonH Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Hmmmm I remember seeing SOMEWHERE in the FM setup a checkbox that says "SHOW SHORTCUTS". Now I can't remember where. Gotta go prowl around.
Lee Smith Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 In the Online help it has this. Choose Edit menu
-Queue- Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Good call, Lee! I had overlooked this preference. Deselecting it does still show the major shortcuts, just not particular ones (like Replace). Why one would not want them to show is beyond my understanding.
Lee Smith Posted September 18, 2003 Posted September 18, 2003 Its funny too that it isn't an option in Mac preferences at all. Although I'm with you, why would we not want them?: Lee
Vaughan Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 Quantitative usability testing (where people are actually timed) shows that keyboard shortcuts are slower than using the mouse and commands-menus. However, due to a phenomenon called "time slice amnesia" (and no I'm not making this up) users *think* that keyboard shortcuts are faster. It's the old "time flies while you're having fun" routine: while users concentrate on remembering which key combinations to use (quite a high level process) they don't notice the amount of time passing. Contrasting to the mouse user who uses quite low level process (read: boring) to move the mouse to the command in the menu and select it. I'm sure I read this on http://www.asktog.com but for the life of me cannot find the exact reference.
Vaughan Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 Found it! http://asktog.com/TOI/toi06KeyboardVMouse1.html
optisyen Posted September 19, 2003 Author Posted September 19, 2003 We are using FileMaker Pro 6.0 v1. There Something on Menu like this : Records / Replace Contents... Ctrl+= When we changed something on any field and look to the menu " Records / Replace Contents... Ctrl+= " line is active. When we try to do it by shortcut, nothing happen. This is the question! Is this a windows bug ??
Lee Smith Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 Hummmmm, Cmd N, Cmd P, Cmd S. I don't think so. Lee
Lee Smith Posted September 19, 2003 Posted September 19, 2003 According to Vaughan, use the menu its faster anyway. However, provided that you have put the cursor into a field that is editable, you should be able to access the "Replace" Function either way. That is the theory anyway. Note: The keyboard command for "Replace" involves only two keys, and you need to hit both keys at the same time. The keys are "Control" & "Equal" or (Control =). I'm not an expert on Windows, but that is the theory anyway. Lee
optisyen Posted September 19, 2003 Author Posted September 19, 2003 When I say "ctrl+=", I obviously mean that "Ctrl and =" pressing at the same time !
-Queue- Posted September 22, 2003 Posted September 22, 2003 I wouldn't say it's obvious, since your original post implied that you were confused how to press '+' and '=' simultaneously.
Vaughan Posted September 23, 2003 Posted September 23, 2003 "We are using FileMaker Pro 6.0 v1." Download the free update to FMP 6.0v4. It might have been an early bug.
optisyen Posted September 25, 2003 Author Posted September 25, 2003 I think I found the solve of problem. We are using turkish keyboard and 7 8 9 " 0 and = " in the same button and " * and ? " on anotther button. But in english keyboard, = is alone. We have to push SHIFT+= for equal sign. Because of my question is printing equal sign without pressin SHIFT. But still has a problem. I have never open Replace dialog window on my PC. But I've done on my friend pc by pressing " CTRL+? "
