I'm supposed to look into web publishing possibilities. I read about this mysterious thing called Web Publishing.

I got my hands on a Pro 6 unlimited CD and have been looking for a good while now, but I can't find any real information at all crazy.gif

- where is this Web Server Connector thingy they keep mentioning?

- how do I install it?

- where?

Well, you know, the absolute 'newbie has no clue where to start asking' stuff.

Can anyone point me towards some helpful information?

In FileMaker, Goto

Edit->Preferences->Application->Plug-ins(tab)->Web Companion(checkbox)

Just check this box and you can click configure to set a homepage. If you want to use Instant Web publishing, keep (built-in) set. If you want to use Custom Web Publishing, move your files to your FileMaker Pro "web" folder (ex. C:Program FilesFileMakerFileMaker Pro 6Web), and then select your homepage.

Then GoTo File->Sharing and check the Web Companion Checkbox here. This step must be done for each database that you wish to share through the web.

If you're planning on doing Custom Web Publishing, I highly recommend the CDML Reference Database. A simple google search should turn it up (or it might be hosted on this site, I'm not sure).

Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks for the info, Jonathan.

Another problem I had was:

I was under the impression that if one would like to webpublish, the database needs to be shared out over IIS or Apache, ported through a thing called Web Server Connector.

Turns out

a) This is in fact the idea but

B) someone gave me a box of unlimited without the Web Connector CD crazy.gif

Now that I have that CD, things are a lot clearer. laugh.gif

Howdy, howdy! Yes, I imagine it'd be hard to use Web Server Connector without having it, eh? Actually, I've never installed mine. WSC is optional. It's for folks who WANT to use Apache or IIS to serve their FM data and have all the bonuses of those other web servers (e.g. if you want to use SSL). Unlimited can serve alone if you like. That's all we use over here.
