Newbies Tim King Posted September 1, 2004 Newbies Posted September 1, 2004 I'm trying to find all records in a given month and then find certain records in that set. I'm sure this is pretty basic but every time I search and get a month, anything I do subsequent to that, starts a find for all records in the database. The only way I know to do this is to use a save as, title the file August and then delete all records and start a secong file for September. The problem is, if I need to enter additional info on a past month, I need to remember what month the record was created. Any suggestions? Keep in mind I'm somewhat of a beginner.
-Queue- Posted September 1, 2004 Posted September 1, 2004 Add your sub-criteria to the original find. E.g. to find all September records where Quantity is greater than 5, enter 9/1/2004...9/30/2004 in the date field and >5 in the Quantity field while in Find Mode.
Newbies Tim King Posted September 1, 2004 Author Newbies Posted September 1, 2004 I can understand that but where I'm running into problems is I want to see all September entries and then one at a time find a particular salesperson. What you are saying , if I want to find salesperson one at a time for September, I can't just search the September records. I need to look for September and the salesperson on each search I do. I wish I had a better way of calling all September records, then searching fjust in those records for each salesperson rather than entering two search parameters with each search. I guess I could set up a script search for all 18 salespeople and automate the process? Thanks
PCGMKTG Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Can you search for September and then constrict the search and seach for salesmen? I too am a beginner but I think that is the way you do it.... Try and see!
Newbies Tim King Posted September 2, 2004 Author Newbies Posted September 2, 2004 I wish you could. When you search September, then search for a particular salesman, it pulls up all records on that salesman regardless of month. The problem is you try to make these things idiot proof. When you ask a novice to do a search then a second request to exclude all but September, you are asking them to enter 3 or 4 parameters in a search and it usually leads to frustration on their part.
Lee Smith Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Hi Tim, With a topic so basic to the needs of users of a database, you know that this topic has had to come up several times in the past. In fact, just last week, I pointed "Another_Karen " who posted this Question Re: Ack! Find date range script? Too many , to 3 files that show how to do this. I'm sure if you did a find of the Forum for "Finding Date Ranges" or some variation thereof, you will find plenty of reading material on the subject. HTH Lee
Matthew F Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 With FilemakerPro v.6 there is an option during a find to "Constrain the Found Set". With Filemaker v.5 you can essentially do the same thing. After finding the month perform a second find using the "Modify last find" menu item (Apple + R on a Mac). Add a second criteria to your search (the salesman's name).
