tmas73 Posted March 10, 2005 Author Posted March 10, 2005 Haaa I see! Thats cool! Ok it works, thanks so much!
tmas73 Posted March 10, 2005 Author Posted March 10, 2005 So there is a slight problem sometimes when you create new records the stars do not show up! I use global storage for the container field! TMAS

andygaunt Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 Hi - Make sure your rating field has an auto enter value of 1, This will cause the calc to display the 5 gray stars.

mr_vodka Posted March 14, 2005 Posted March 14, 2005 as andy had said, and if you re look at the demo I posted, you will see that the field, current_num_stars has an auto entry calculation of 1. This sets up the field to have 0 stars each time a new record is created.

tmas73 Posted March 14, 2005 Author Posted March 14, 2005 Yes both the one I re-created or any example here that has a calculated value 1 in the field wont create gray stars on creating a new record! Thanks TMAS

mr_vodka Posted March 14, 2005 Posted March 14, 2005 Oops.. my apologies. I posted the wrong zip. Just change the stars repeating container field into a global. The demo should be correct now. P.S. When you change it to a global, the contents of the field will be removed, so make sure you have back up copies of the iamges.

mr_vodka Posted March 15, 2005 Posted March 15, 2005 The stars on all the records should not be the same. The only thing that should be global is the "stars" container field. Each record will have its own unique current_num_stars number fieldas well as its corresponding caluclation field, cStars. The cStars field is what you use to show the stars.

LaRetta Posted March 22, 2005 Posted March 22, 2005 Both demos posted here require clicking a radio button (which changes the field contents) thus changes the stars or additional buttons to click to change the stars (via script). My Users would prefer just seeing - and clicking - the appropriate star (as attached). A bit cleaner, I think. You can do away with the radio buttons AND additonal buttons by placing a transparent circle over the stars themselves. You don't need a script - just attach a Set Field [ ] with script parameter directly to each transparent circle (via Specify Button). Hint: When working with this kind of thing, lock your lower fields, leave your transparent circles solid until properly placed and zoom in to 400% for precise placement. Yeah, I needed to work on something FUN for a few minutes and I ADORE this kind of thing!! LaRetta stars2.zip
akeslady Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 I checked out your starrating. I would like to use something similar... I have problems with the cStars, I don't get any stars in that field. How did you do that? Thanks Britt
LaRetta Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 Hi Britt, You place your graphics into the Stars container global repeating field. To do so: Place that Stars field on a layout. Select Field format (by right-clicking on field) and select for it to display repetitions 1 through 6. Then switch back to Browse mode and paste each of your graphics into the various repetitions. Once you have everything the way you want it, you can delete the Stars field from your layout. Only bring it back if you need to change something in it. If you need to delete a graphic from a repetition, select the repetition and hit [Delete]. The cStars calculation will take it from there. LaRetta
akeslady Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 Thanks for replying so fast! Sorry, but I don't get it at all! I am brand new to FileMaker. If there are 5 stars why are there 6 repetitions? And how can you paste something in Browse mode? If I want to incorporate something like this in my own file, should I make a new table and take it from that table or should I create new fields in my file? I have been starring at this for more than 24 hours, so I see stars all over the place... Your help is much appreciated! Thanks, Britt
LaRetta Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 Hi Britt, Take that demo file and try it. Place the Stars field on the layout and try what I've described - expanding it's repetitions. Then go to Browse and take a look. I think it will become clear once you do that. Then, while still in Browse, put your cursor in the first repetition and [CTRL-C] to copy the image. Then hit your Delete key which will delete the first image. Then [CTRL-P] to paste the stars back into it. Then yes, 1) add the fields (Stars and cStars) in your existing file, 2) change the calculation formula in cStars to your existing field needs and you'll be in business! LaRetta
akeslady Posted March 23, 2005 Posted March 23, 2005 Thank you so much! A bunch of roses for you! I can't believe I did it!!! I think I have to learn FileMaker, it is probably fun when you know how to use it. Britt
Zero Tolerence Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 Here are a few examples. Layouts Explain. Example 1 is the simplest i think, although 2 is just another variation. 3 however, uses scripts and invisible buttons, and swithing layouts. Simple perhaps, but it would get the job done. Star.zip
