Steverino Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 I've recently experienced some pretty bizarre behavior from two different databases, and I'm beginning to get alarmed. (I've NEVER seen anything like this before.) One database had a text field, with some entries set to "Yes" or "No" -- however, when I searched for the records set to "Yes," FM said that no records were found (I tried the search a number of different ways). I fiddled with the field, turning the indexing on and off, and eventually it began to work (I don't know exactly what enabled it to work again). With another database, I found a calculation field had mysteriously changed to a text field. When I changed it back to a calculation, the original calculation was, in fact, preserved. But one of the relationships based on that calculation does not work, and again, I can't find entries containing things in the field. What could be going on?
Steverino Posted February 20, 2006 Author Posted February 20, 2006 Sorry -- I just realized that the calculation field was accidentally set to result in "number" instead of "text." But still, the changing of the field (I know I didn't do it), and the fact that items couldn't be found in a text field in the other database is alarming.
Steverino Posted April 18, 2006 Author Posted April 18, 2006 I've again had the experience of not being able to find items that I know are in the fields of some records. (I can see the data in the fields.) In one case, I searched for all records that didn't have a blank in a field (using the "*"), and I kept getting an error that no records were found. I fiddled with the indexing, and then that same search found ALL the records -- even though most of the records had fields that were blank. (By turning the indexing off and on, I finally got the search working.) Still, even though my database is "fixed," I'm worried about future problems. Anybody have a clue about what is happening?
Lee Smith Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 Was this file "Converted" or did you create it in v8?
aholtzapfel Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 I'm having similar problems. the indexing on fields seems to be getting corrupt. Causing finds to fail. It has happened repeatedly over the last week.(multiple files, multiple fields) Yesterday I came in and 2 of my 8 files on FM server were closed and would not open. I opened them on my local machine and it removed unused blocks. I then copied them back to the server and they opened fine. The data itself seems fine. I've tried recovery of a couple of my backup files (known to have these issues) but the recovery did not find any errors. Anyone know what could cause this kind of corruption? Would a larger cashe size on local machines (set to 16 mb) or the server cause the index to not get updated. I am at a loss. Any insights into this would be welcome.
LaRetta Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 8.0v1 had indexing problems and couldn't find a simple 1 during my search (and many other search-fail oddities such as this). Have you updated to 8.0v2?
gdurniak Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 aholtzapfel, it is possible that not all indexing problems have been resolved, even in FM8v2 it would pay to speak with FileMaker Tech Support directly a database industry "rule of thumb" is to set cache at about 10% of file size
