LaRetta Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 In your value list example using a value list that sorts on a second field any values missing data in the second field will not appear in the calculated result. In my example, the second field is the unique serial and never empty. But Comment's point is well taken; I've just been biten by GetNthRecord() speed tests and don't fully trust it yet. However, the value list can be conditional and limited to only an Invoice's LineItems as well. I just wanted to break the myth that value lists can only return alpha-sorted results which is where this thread was originally heading. :wink2:

Have it out in the open, you're almost drooling to let the world into you knowledge. Is it done in the indexing of the field or is done by FilerValues( --sd
LaRetta Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 Thanks, Raz. You're cute, Soren! I have no secrets. My demo file shows a value list NOT in alpha (but by creation) and it's no secret to many people - only to some. But it USED to be a big deal - the fact that we could only get value lists in alpha order. We are free from that restriction now! A CF might be more flexible overall but not everyone has Advanced. Value list is just another possible alternative.
comment Posted June 21, 2006 Posted June 21, 2006 GetNthRecord() is not ALWAYS more flexible - precisely because of the sort order issue.
Ohgo_Ohgo Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 (edited) Hi Jason Goldsmith ! I have put a more complete sample file together from Your original posted file. I used a ValueList as an "helper" and an unstored calculation to get the Text List. It should show You what You want , hopefully ;-) and saves may be some time. Because I still cannot post files on this forum I posted here (it's on this forum I got mixed up sorry ) http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/178098/ POST SCRIPTUM: After I did my sample file I looked at LaRetta's file and yes it’s almost the same! Sorry about that ! Hope LaRetta believes I did not steal his idea ! It means I really agree with LaRetta (this time ;-) ) Edited June 28, 2006 by Guest I am getting stupid I mixed up the forums
sherifmayika Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 If I inderstand you use this, set filed [....gfield= poratal field]
Squeaky Data Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 Now you can just upgrade to FileMaker 8.5 and use the new List() function.
