VICH Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 any tips to mimic the feel of an actually web page as apposed to a form that is just meant to be filled out? im attempting to make a database for internet savvy useres as opposed to the standard database user
Martin Brändle Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 LOL about the previous answers, but there is a general obstacle to mimicking a web page within FileMaker if one does not want to resort to the WebViewer. It's the missing feature to set a hypertext link within a text field.
Genx Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 It's the missing feature to set a hypertext link within a text field. But why not just use a dynamic merge field and change it to a button?
comment Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Why don't you post a demo showing what you mean?
Martin Brändle Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 The button would span the whole field, wouldn't it? A hyperlink however would span only a certain part of the text within the field.
Genx Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 So you mean hyperlinks embedded within a body of text somewhere? I suppose that would be useful, but... in all honesty, why not use the webviewer, you get inline images that way as well . How you'd actually store the data though, there's the issue, I think FM should introduce a new "mixed" field type e.g. Text/Html
Martin Brändle Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 Yes, exactly. BTW I mentioned the WV in my first post in this thread.
Fitch Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 You can't really do links within a text field, but for static text (e.g. field labels) or buttons on a layout, you can format them as blue underlined text and they resemble web links for your "savvy" users. We've taken this approach with our product and I think it looks good -- generally a cleaner look than boxy old-school buttons.
Brian C Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 I have seen the webportal used with the data protocol in order to build content for the portal via a calculated result. This can be very interesting since normally the webportal is only used to "get" a webpage from a webserver somewhere else... In other words, you could build an entire webpage using data from the current filemaker file(s) you are in and display it without actually going to a website on a web server. I don't know if this is what you would want since you obviously cannot control filemaker from the webportal, but if you are looking for a way to embed weblinks into content using data within your filemaker solution, this could be an option for you. Another cool thing about using this little known feature is that it could also be used to generate a form that is prefilled if need be that you can use to "post" data to a webserver.
BruceJ Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Maybe the internet guys shoudl be trying to mimic FileMaker instead of the other way around! "Savy" users will adapt to most any interface. Stand stall, be a proud FileMaker developer.. build it and they will come.
Martin Brändle Posted April 22, 2007 Posted April 22, 2007 Maybe the internet guys shoudl be trying to mimic FileMaker instead of the other way around! Why? Isn't there already IWP?
