Runtime solution for Hosted files on FM server

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have hosted my database files on FM server .

I am using Windows.

I want to create a runtime solution for the hosted files from the server.

This is because , I Do not want to install FM Pro as a client for each user. I have a copy of FM pro advanced for creating my databases.

Is it possible ? Host the Database on Server and create a runtime to point to host files on server and put the Runtime on network where each user can run it from network and not to have FM pro on their machine.

Please help...

Thanks

It is not possible to do as you have described. Runtimes are essentially stand-alone applications. They cannot be networked together to share data. You *may* be able to do export / import operations but runtimes are not able to access data dynamically from either FM Server or standard Filemaker Pro.

If the cost of purchasing full-blown copies of Filemaker for regular users seems unnecessary then you may take some comfort in this rumor.

PS. The Think Secret folks have a pretty good reputation for accuracy in the past, at least when concerning recent FM releases.

Ohh...

I had some hope of creating the Shared runtime file. I saw a "Runtime Solution" tab in the FM sever propertis where u have to mention which all file types it supports... Does it not mean you can create runtime solution for these server databases?

What I think it means is that you can take a runtime file, host it on the server, and access it from regular copies of Filemaker Pro.

The runtime property of FileMaker Server refers to the ability of Server automatically to open for hosting the [color:red]data files associated with a runtime solution.

Such solutions consist of two aprts: the runtime engine and the associated data files.

There is no capability to connect to hosted files using a runtime engine.

As for the "rumors", just remember that "He who lives by the FIleMaker Crystal Ball soon learns to eat ground Case Functions."

Hi. Take a look at This Post

The rumored "thin" version of Filemaker may not be the ultimate answer. It all depends on if it is introduced at all, how much it costs, and what its limitations are. Right now it's only speculation. That is why I chose the words "may take some comfort."

I hit the back button too many times and accidentially post the same thing twice. So this post is for nothing.

Nice weather we've been having huh?

... I don't get it, seriously...

Alternatively...

Upgrade to FMS Advanced and use web publishing.

Historically, there have been tons of rumors about future products. People assume these to eb true. As a result, they make assumptions not buttressed by facts. They wind up disappointed at best and financially strapped at worst.

The quotation is a parody of well-known one to the effect of those who live by the crystal ball learn to eat ground glass.
