justakid Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 hey guys, couldn't find a search term to give me the answers I needed so hopefully this is new. I am trying to create a error report page, where you have a column for time code, error and error severity. My problem is that, because the amount of errors will vary, I don't want to create a table with a preset amount of rows. I have seen databases where you could hit a button and it would insert a new row for a new 'error' but am not sure about how I should go abouts doing it. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Lee Smith Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 I think you are talking about a Audit Trail, a Search for Audit, or Field Modification at here at the Forum should provide you with a lot of hits. Be sure to look for ones that are old. You can also search for Field Modification Resource Be sure that you search for your version, FileMaker 5, 6. . another one to check out is Here called, Comprehensive Audit Tracking System. This is a lot simpler using version 8 - 9. Lee
justakid Posted January 7, 2008 Author Posted January 7, 2008 thanks for the response Lee, I have actually looked at a couple of the audit ones, but they actually create logs based on changes. what I want to do is: Create Record Tape 001 (watch tape) everytime I see an error (eg visual glitch) I want to insert a record of that error. so in a way, I want to able to create multiple records with in a record. Thinking about it, does this sound like it might work? 1.Create database 1 - Tapes 2.Create database 2 - errors 3.Relate tapes (one) to errors (many) 4.create a errors field in the errors database 5.insert that errors field into the tapes database as a portal so everytime a error is input, it is actually creating a record in the error database which is linked to tapes via a unique tape ID...
comment Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 Exactly, except what you call a database is a table. The term "database" is kind of vague when working with Filemaker - most often it means a "database file" with one or several tables.
justakid Posted January 7, 2008 Author Posted January 7, 2008 sorry - still remember the term from Access days. I'll give it a go and let you know how I go. thanks
normanicus Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 You might want to check out this thread, 'Track Modifications', on the Filemaker Talk forum: http://www.listsearch.com/FileMaker/Thread/index.lasso?47374#161752
