mkmd Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 I created 7 tables for an invoice management solution. I find the seven layouts. But, only the primary key and Fk fields appear on the layouts. Why do the other fields like First name etc do not show in the Customer layout? M K
Lee Smith Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Do they show in Layout Mode? How many Table Occurances do you have? In Layout Mode, double click one of the fields and see if say Table listed in the Display Data From: is the one you thought the fields are in. You could post a copy of your database so we can look at this with you. Lee
mkmd Posted December 27, 2009 Author Posted December 27, 2009 Thanks Lee for your kind reply, I have been pulling my hair out. How do I attach my FM file?
Lee Smith Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 I explained it here awhile back, see if it helps you. Link Let us know if you need more help. Lee
mkmd Posted December 27, 2009 Author Posted December 27, 2009 It is strange that 'EXPENSES' layout shows the fields. I have 7 tables and 7 Table occurances. I also checked the display dialog box. What gives? I am attaching the file: MarsInvestigations I tried to zip the file but it zips to .zipx Thanks MK
bcooney Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 MK, You can manually add fields to existing layouts using the field tool in Layout mode. -Barbara
mkmd Posted December 27, 2009 Author Posted December 27, 2009 Thanks, but I was curious why this is happening? Thanks MK
comment Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 You mean why it's NOT happening - see the second row in paragraph 2: http://www.filemaker.com/help/html/preferences.26.3.html#1027658
mkmd Posted December 28, 2009 Author Posted December 28, 2009 (edited) Thanks for the reply. Actually that's the first thing I checked. The preferences are set to show newly added fields. M Khan Edited December 28, 2009 by Guest
Lee Smith Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Attach a copy of your file so that we can see what you are looking at. The .zipx extension is new to me, I'm not a Windows person, but there must be a way to change to just plain zip. We have a lot of Window users and this hasn't been a problem to others that I'm aware of. HTH Lee
comment Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 The preferences are set to show newly added fields. Note that this only adds newly defined fields to the current layout. If you add fields to another table (i.e. not the table of the current layout), these fields will NOT be automatically added to any layout.
mkmd Posted December 28, 2009 Author Posted December 28, 2009 (edited) Here is the .zip file. Thanks MK Edited December 28, 2009 by Guest please re-attach file..
Lee Smith Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 I get an error on your attachment. We seem to be having a recurring problem with this feature. I'll contact Admin and let them know. Try sending it to me using the Private Topic and we'll see if that helps. Lee
mkmd Posted December 28, 2009 Author Posted December 28, 2009 (edited) Hi : The file did not upload because there was a glitch in the upload process, acc. to Ocean West. I am uploading it again. Returning to the original problem, the solution is simple: I can insert fields. But I am curious about the fundamental aspects of a database. If fields start missing in a critical item, then what? M K Ch07_Mars_Investigations_Start.zip Edited December 28, 2009 by Guest spelling. paragraph
bcooney Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Fields aren't missing. Fields are not displayed on a layout. You need to add them to the layout. There is no fundamental aspect of the database to worry about. You've been told about the FM Preference that adds the fields to a layout or not--in both this forum and FMI's. I see that you're still confused. Why and about what?
Lee Smith Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 (edited) Your Patience paid off, the attachment works. Hooray. I reviewed your file, and it sure looks like the "Add newly defined fields to current layout" wasn't checked when the file was being created, even though it is checked now, and it worked when I tested it. Returning to the original problem, the solution is simple: I can insert fields. Yep, you can drag them onto layout one at a time, or you could just create a New Layout for each of the current one's and select all of the fields you want on the New Layout in the creation of it. mkmd Posted December 28, 2009 Author Posted December 28, 2009 Thanks for your patience. It appears that the db works on your system but not on mine. I checked again. In the preferences - layout the item Add newly defined fields to current layout is checked in all the 8 layouts. I still see only the Pk and fk fields. Regards MK
bcooney Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Enabling this preference does not add the fields to the layout that were defined during the period this preference was disabled. You need to add these fields manually. Any new fields that you define will be added to the layout.
