Filemaker Pro 2.1 backing up files

Can someone please tell us how to backup files on our Filemaker 2.1 program. We have NEVER been able to figure this out. I want to backup onto a floppy. There is no backup icon and I've tried the "save as" and that didn't work either. I don't want everything that has been entered, just a certain new file.

Thanks.

One way is to get a plugin like the Troi File Dialogs, but I'm not sure they would work with your early version of FM. They're easy to use and would let you copy files between folders and drives. His website is www.troi.com

Plug-in's are not support by FileMaker 2.1. I believe to use Save As you may have to have guests quit from FM. Why not upgrade, you have avoided 3.0, 4.0, 4.1, and 5.0. There is a limit to how cheap you can be! wink.gif" border="0 .

I'm still using FMPRO 2.1 because what I'm doing (simple database) wouldn't be enhanced by upgrading!

I'm backing up my files all the time using two methods. 1) MSBACK and 2)ZIP 8.0

Love it. NORM

You mean that your solution wouldn't be enhanced by a database program that can properly handle dates greater than 1999?

FMP 2.1 is *not* Y2k compliant. It assumes all dates are 19XX.

Actually FM 2.1 and Y2K is verrry interesting. On the Mac, it becomes compliant if you go to the Date and Time Control Panel and make sure the "Show Century" checkbox is checked. I have a client that had finds fail in Y2K and we corrected the problem with this method.

Hmmm. I thought that despte doing this, FMP 2.1 only considered the last two digits of the year in calculations.

Easy to test: calculate 1/1/99 - 1/1/00 and report what the answer is.

Yeah its hidden. Too many people post replies directly to me rather than the Forum.

(...puts on mind-reading hat...)

When you say "a certain new file," do you mean you want to save one or more RECORDS from a given database? If so, use the "save as" to make a clone (an empty copy) of your database. Now, in the original db, find just the records you want to "save." Then, open the clone and import from the original db. Only the records in the current found set will be imported.

Alternatively, you can find one or more records and export them to various formats. That's a perfectly valid way to archive/backup/tranfer data as well.

When you want to "backup" to a floppy, just close all your FileMaker files, and drag the ones you want to copy over to the floppy. Or as Norm pointed out, you could use one of many backup programs available.

Apologies if I've misunderstood the question.

Fitch -- Brilliant! Why didn't I think of answering the original question! <slaps forehead>

It sounds like the database has a password that is limiting your access.

tongue.gif Now I'm slapping my forehead, I see the original question is 4 months old. That Norm, reviving an old thread, what a troublemaker. tongue.gif

I don't do calcuations. This is a straight database of a record collection, nothing more. If I were doing bells and whistles, I'd upgrade. Is your e-mail hidden? THANKS.
