Apparently "Belkin in the UK" do not provide a UPS with a USB interface for the Mac. All they provide is the serial version for which there is no Mac software for scheduled shutdowns. I thought of getting a USB to Serial cable but will the software still work properly? I think the Voltage Amperes (VA) is different for the serial RS-232 UPS (625VA) and the USB UPS (650VA).

I would be grateful if anyone could help me find a solution or suggest a different UPS for the UK.

Thanks!!

Not sure, I'm using the USB 650VA, the software is called "Senttry Bulldog" (fyi)

You might want to look into APS: http://www.apstech.com

they say they have shutdown software for MacOS 9.04, but I'm not sure about the UK compatibility.

My APC Back-UPS 500 comes with USB cable and Mac/98/2000 software.

I must asked for serial cable and NT software and that come Free in 5 days -- in Czech Republic. I just like the APC :-)

The only currently available Mac compatible single phase UPS on the market in the UK is the MGE polar ellipse PREMIUM.....I had our microwarehouse account manager searching for a couple of weeks and they will order the MGE for you if you want one it's about

I would not recommend trying to use serial UPS software and a USB/Serial adapter. A lot of the older Mac serial software depends upon an exact hardware port and does not use the communications toolbox. Bottom line, unless you do a test before you buy, try a get a UPS the supports a native Mac USB connection. The only units I know of at this time that support USB on the Mac are made by Belkin and APC. Sophisticated Circuits is considering building a unit with a USB connection that would allow any older UPS to be used with a USB Mac by performing the power down detections independently, but I don't know if the will commit to a product.
