Hello File Maker Community:

I am working in a data base with different schools with several layouts. Each layout have different information like Google maps, Websites and data. All different sources of data have a common key (school number) which has been used to create relationships. The solution works well all the information shows as I wanted. However, I want to create a search menu to select one school then all layouts will show for that school. So far I am able to create a search but only goes to one layout, the other layouts show different schools.

I hope I can get support to find the solution to have one search for multiple layouts.

Best,

Hi Stella and welcome to the forums,

I’ve moved your topic from "FileMaker Pro 12" to "Relationships” because, the general topics are reserved for discussion of the new functions and features that were introduced with that release of FileMaker.

Read about relationships, as that’s going to be the key of seeing all your data in one place.

If you need some references about relationships let us know.

When you say "create a search" you mean a script that does a Perform Find?

If you want Users from a particular school to only see that school's records then the simplest would be to use security to restrict a User to their records so records <> the school are automatically omitted from finds.  You will still need to control Show All Records and Show Omitted, where other schools' records could display in lists with the ugly <no access> but it is the only guaranteed way.

Script triggers OnLayoutEnter could be used (to find school records) but it is worrisome ... all it takes is creating a single new layout and forgetting to attach the layout trigger and the method will break.

In your privilege set, you can use the global they select as the school but that would mean anyone could view any school by selecting it.  If Users should be restricted to their school, add their SchoolID into their staff record and then find their staff record at login, set the global via script, and use that global (that has restricted access) in your privilege calculation.
