  1. Help!! Long ago before server-side-scripting and event triggers, in Filemaker 8, we built a dedicated server box to host Dacon's Mailit and Scriptfire plugins. Everything was peachy, until we upgraded to Windows 2007 and Filemaker 10. I was forced to rebuild the script-box and install the latest Scriptfire plugin. Since the rebuild, I have to re-initialize every script after a reboot or crash of the application. This is quite annoying as we have a monthly routine which the Filemaker Server is rebooted. Rather than rebuilding all my scripts for the server-side scripting, I'd rather continue using a dedicated scriptbox. However I cannot for the life of me figure out why the scripts are not saved after a reboot. I still see the scripts in the list set to run, but they never actually run until I remove the scheduled script and re-initialize. I have contacted Dacons numerous times, the response has been the same every time: send us your database files. I cannot do that - my company would never allow it!! I've searched the internet but have turned up no similar issues with Scriptfire.
  2. Help! We have a database used by about 20 employees throughout the country. Half of them work in our HQ using a client copy of FMP, the others connect via Citrix Presentation software (XenApp). Originally, our db was built in FMP7 which allowed SendMail script step to open the client's email program and populate the text generated by my script. This worked great when all of our engineers were located in our HQ building. Now since everyone has updated to FMP10, I built a new email client system which uses the new SendMail via the built-in SMTP system. This works perfectly, except for one issue. The emails have incorrect messageID headers which trigger spam filters to block the emails from our system sent to customers. We have had two customers who are unable to receive these emails thanks to this issue. Specifically, here is an example of the MessageID header for emails sent via SMTP to our customers: FileMaker.4e9c3c79.c.bb8@. because there is nothing after the @ symbol, spam filters treat the email as spam. It seems Filemaker is aware of the issue, but i have not seen a solution or a resolution/bugfix for this issue. Does anyone know anything else, my search takes me back to the bug reports, but nothing further: http://forums.filemaker.com/posts/7ee880eceb http://forums.filemaker.com/posts/5e4749e6e2 I am aware of Dacons Mail.It plugin, but am not quite satisfied with this solution - too expensive for a 25 user license and I don't entirely like Dacons ever since their latest version of Scriptfire screwed up my script-box. Are there any other cheaper email plugins that are stable. I only need the plugin to send, not anything advanced like receiving email or attaching files. Thanks guys! - Mike
  3. My mistake, I mistyped my thoughts. I do use only unique ID numbers to relate records. Unfortunately My boss who built the initial database had no concept of this. (even though he has db experience dating back to the early 1990s!) I have spent over 180 hours fixing a mistake he made by relating contacts to the rest of the database with a calculation field based on company name plus full name (correcting a typo would break relationship to entire database!) I'll look into that privilege rule you're talking about, that will save me a lot of time if i can integrate it
  4. Thanks for you're reply, I'll consider that. Unfortunately I had to build this system to retrofit an existing complex database of only 14 users. I built the system initially as part of a test database which became a new place to hold custom settings for each user. The new personnel db was created as a sort of basic training for my assistant. The first name and last name is a good idea for relating the two. The Permission system in accounts and privileges does not allow me to give my users permission to choose what records our parnters overseas have access to. I am actually already testing some Privilege sets for our remote users which will restrict access to tables with confidential information. Thanks again, that put me on the right path.
  5. Hello, I'm trying to build a type of user permission system which will restrict access to specific records and activities (such as exporting data, emailing customers, etc) When a new user is detected in my database currently, it creates a record in a table called "User_Preferences" and stores the Get(AccountName) to the field called Username As training for my assistant, I assigned him the task of creating a new table for personnel records to keep track of employee contact information. I want to link these two together with a field in the personnel table called r_username Is there a way to build the value list so only users in the User_Preferences table which have no relating personnel record show up?
  6. Just curious we are about to completely overhaul our database by upgrading from FMP8 to FMP10, and setting up a Citrix Essentials application layer for our remote offices. Part of our issue is that currently, peachtree quotes are imported as file references to pdf files. I recall that the new version of peachtree accounting software runs SQL, has anyone successfully used Filemaker 10 to access Peachtree data like the quotes database?
  7. So i had an old ATI 64mb dual vga video card at work on my Dell Dimension 3000. I just installed a new GeForce 9400 GT with dual VGA outputs. In addition to this, i have a 3rd (primary monitor) connected to the onboard vga. Anyway, so i updated all drivers, for computer and whatnot. And everything works fine and dandy. Except for my FMP 8 advanced! The program loads fine, however no matter what database i open, they all appear distorted (see attached file for snapshot) FMP works fine on my onboard vga output, but either of my 2 other montiors connected to the new card display that! What gives??
  8. Really, so I won't have to do 10 or 20 hours of work to fix the relationships?! Thanks
  9. Question - Since I'm not the admin when it comes to the FMP server. If we save a copy and compact it, Will that break all relationships with the other database files that we use? Every database file has numerous relationships to tables on other files, and scripts set to go to related records on other layouts not to mention that we also have a slew of calculated fields in other records that check related fields in the affected database.
  10. Wow! That is scary! I have a database i manage for our international IT company - I have several tables over 5 files that over 30,000 records in each! Thank GOD our company is a 3rd party service provider for Netapp data storage - their snapshot technology lets me 'snap' back to a copy of the database files from any month and any year since we have had the database (Snapshots are taken every hour!) Just as an aside, I had a corupted layout one time, caused when the server crashed while i was editing a layout. Anytime after that when accessing the layout, it would crash the server again. The recovery thankfully fixed this Question, you mention only some of thedata is being exported, is it possible the other data is in a related table?
  11. Hey everyone, got a bit of a quandary in our database that i can't quite solve. We are running some legacy databases from the days of FMP7, upgraded to FMP 8 (clients and servers). We have around 5 database files all linked together and related to each other for the various departments of our company. Its a rather small database, only about 15 people using it. All of our database files are roughly 100 to 200 megabytes in size, Minus one database. Funny thing is it is not the most complex and largest database that we have in terms of records/relationships/fields/tables, etc. However it is growing quite large: 1.8 gigabytes currently!! Previously we encountered this problem in the database, and traced it back to a container field used to store PDF files of quotes. We removed that and the problem went away. I have already done this with the database file - I am linking to the PDF files instead of containing them in the database. I also have turned off indexing on many fields used for one table that had 32,000 records. None of this has affected the size of the file! How can i shrink the size of the database? It is getting to be a big stress for me in the event our server crashes (hasn't recently) we could be down for over an hour while the thing re-checks all the database files! Thanks in advance!
  12. Question: How hard would it be to synchronize the data between Trac (http://trac.edgewall.org/) and Filemaker Pro 8? I have never used Trac myself, I have used similar adaptations of Trac, and really thing it could benefit my company. One of the services we offer is 3rd party support for server systems, and our engineers are on call 24/7. Perhaps it would be worth it for them to use a system like Trac for interface with our engineering databases. I could not find anything on the web after doing a brief search Regards, - Mike
  13. Hey all, not sure if this is the correct forum for asking this but i figured since this is all about building layouts it might be the place. I am very interested in buying a wacom tablet for my office. I am not the graphic artist or anything. I am simply looking for a way to sketch out and layout graphics quickly and easily. And since I use my mouse with my right hand, but i am left-handed at writing, I could easily use both at the same time. Does anyone know how handy (no pun intended!) wacom tablets are with making layouts in filemaker pro? Is it worth my time? What models would you recommend? Thanks All! - Mike
  14. Allow me to correct myself, I was not opening the same files we are hosting on my personal computer. I had a database of layouts (theme-library, great collection) - when opening over the network (residing in a folder on our NAS) i experience the same lag as when i copied that file to my personal computer and opened it.
  15. Correct, But i have also encountered the same lag in performance when loading other database not being served on my own machine
  16. Hello All! I have a bit of an issue I can't recall when it started but it bugs the crap out of me! After YEARS of agonizing pain dealing with windows 2000. We FINALLY got new computers (rebuilt) with fresh clean copies of windows XP pro. My computer is running a Pentium 4 2.8ghz processor (32bit) with 2gigs of ram. (Dell Dimension 3000 motherboard) - I have 3 monitors hooked up to it with the use of an ATI Radeon 7000 dual pci video card. I run diskeeper 10 to keep the drive defraged for optimal performance. I am a huge memory freak i always watch my resource usage. Anyway, Whenever i am working on layouts in Filemaker, I notice considerable lag when making buttons or moving stuff with the mouse. It jumps a bit then starts going. It gets QUITE annoying to edit layouts. I thought it might be my video card, so i switched to another monitor (plugged into my on-board) - and still have no change in lag. I thought it might be the network, so i attempted to work on a layout in a file residing on my computer. No change. What suggestions do you guys have to what might be the issue? I'm desperate for help, I have several big projects coming up for work that will require me to completely change several key relationships throughout 100 or so layouts and 20+ tables, This lag will slow me down quite a bit. Regards, - Mike
  17. Hey all, I've been reading around and found no answer to this common problem. When my coworkers execute scripts that generate a send mail step, they can not access filemaker until they send the email. I could solve the problem by simply sending mail without dialog, however we need to be able to edit the emails first. The only solution i've found is to use a mailto script step. Since you can add cc, bcc, subject, and even body text via a mailto: open url step. This won't work for us since there is a limit on the length of the body text using that step. The strange (well not really) thing is that I myself use Mozilla Thunderbird, and do not experience this issue. And i can't get them to switch to thunderbird. So are there any solutions out there for how to let my users access filemaker pro before sending the email?
  18. Interesting concept, however my script runs every few minutes, wouldn't that use up a lot of resources? You are talking about just setting up a scheduled event within windows 2000 right? That may work, but what i'm more curious about, is if there is a way to bypass having to use a que system, and instead having some sort of system that has a CGI script or somethign hosted on our webserver that can authenticate and send emails. Has that been done?
  19. I have a bit of an issue, not sure if anyone else has encountered it. My boss wanted a way to be able to send emails and save the emails related to each contact from the road, and to allow our UK office to send emails from our database. My solution was to create a Table of emails, and set the status to "unsent". Using ScriptFire Plugin, we have a server that runs a script every 5 minutes and looks for unsent emails, if found, it sends them using the EmailIt Plugin (both by Dacons) Its quite an ingenious quick fix, but there's one problem: ScriptFire does not run if there is a dialog box in Filemaker Open (such as communication lost with host server). Therefor our system has no checks and balance. I have an email that goes out every morning that lets me know the server is running, but that is not enough. We tried using the "Open URL" Script step to send the data to the computer's mail client with mixed success using the "Mailto:whatever@whatever.com?subject="whatever"?body="blahblahblah"" However, this link system only allows two or three lines of body text at most. Is there a better solution for sending emails from fmp web?
  20. we already have the main table being printed in list view, how can i print two list views?
  21. Hey all, We have an orders db that handles all information on an order. There are layouts for the printouts such as production and shipping which has the shipping address and the line items. Due to changes in procedures, we now have a portal of special shipping instructions for special customers. This is a table related to the company of a contact. What is the best practice for displaying a portal of shipping instructions on a printout? I have limited space to work with, not sure what way is best to ensure that most or all notes are printed to ensure our shipping guys don't forget?
  22. Hey all, quick question. I am very new to API's and am looking into the possibility of connecting our filemaker pro prospector database list with our www.icontact.com email marketing provider. Here is the page with a brief overview of the API http://app.intellicontact.com/icp/pub/api/doc/api.html Could it be done using filemaker pro 8? or could we only do it using filemaker pro 8.5 with the web-viewer function?
  23. Well, we are a 3rd party data storage reseller/technical support. We have a wonderful Network Appliance server set up with snapshots of our entire database every hour, we can jump back several months if we want. How can we check if the files are corrupt/damaged. I am aware that using the recover tool can fix problems temporarily, but is not recommended
  24. We have several fmp database files, all inter-related, for each section of our company. Our fmp server crashed today and after it checked the files and opened them up, we found that some of the most recent data dissapeared. I understand the concept of exiting a field for data to be saved. But the entire record was not lost, and there were two emails generated by our fmp database sent out by the same user about an hour before the db crashed. We have concluded that the user could not have been in two records at the same time, so the changes had to have been saved on at least one of the two records he was on. Both his records and two others from today have several fields missing. Apparently strange things like this have happened in the past but this is the first time we've had proof that it was not someone accidentally deleting any data
  25. unless he saw a screenshot, because he does not use macs none of us do here. We are all using windoze 2k machines
