February 7, 200223 yr FM server can't publish to the web with web companion? From looking at spec sheets and reading pdf files and help files, it seems that FM server only does direct FM clients, not web publishing like FM Pro (which, ironically, as the 'entry level' product, does both) There is some reference to using the Web Companion in the documentaion, but it looks like ANOTHER computer would have to run FM pro, open the server hosted database remotely, and the FM pro machine would publish to the web. can this be true? two machines ? Am I missing something? Why is the 'server' version less functional than the regular version? any insight would be appreciated. Is anyone else doing this, hosting a database with FM server and also providing access to it over the web? thanks
February 7, 200223 yr FM Server is pure and simple a database server (like SQL Server or Oracle, neither of which can do this either). Filemaker Pro Unlimited (with Web Companion) is what is used to make databases served by FM Server available to the web site. There are a whole slew of performance and security reasons why they chose to do it this way.
February 7, 200223 yr FMPro Unlimited is required for serving web pages for FMPro 5+ applications. However if you are using FMPro 4 then Unlimited is not necessary. Jost so you know since you did not speicfy the version of FMPro you were planning to use. SIMPLIFY ... Keith

February 8, 200223 yr I'm not sure. However in Australia, Server is approx $2,400 and Unlimited is approx $2,200 So I think around $3,000 Australian (approx $1,500 US) for the combined version. I guess you can see why we squeeze as much as possible out of FMP before we go to Server and/or Unlimited. All the best. Garry
February 8, 200223 yr yeh then you've got to buy the CPUs, KVM, maybe another Ethernet Switch, cabling, rack for all the extra kit, extension plugs, UPS's etc etc etc etc. When we went from single box to 5 Mac G4 RAIC we spent about
February 8, 200223 yr To add a question to this, can Unlimited be a client of Server and still broadcast over the web?

Yes it can be, and in many instances this is the required configuration. If you're coming to the FileMAker Pro Summit week after next, I'll be discussing this very issue in one of my presentations. See the chart on the FMI web site as well. HTh Old Advance Man
