Newbies DaveBoy Posted August 22, 2003 Newbies Posted August 22, 2003 I'm in need of a cheep way to host my FM database web site. The site I've built is a community service site (lots of time in it, no money). All the hosting site out there want $50 - $100 per month. Is there anything out there a lot cheeper? Thanks
Anatoli Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 What are your requirements? What will be the traffic?
Newbies DaveBoy Posted August 22, 2003 Author Newbies Posted August 22, 2003 It's an art site just for the Dallas area. People will be able to upload images. I built it with FM-6 & CDML. traffic will be low. Still new at this, so I'm not sure what other requirements I would need (PHP, Lasso)
Anatoli Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 Hmm, we can host one or two databases, but because of security we don't allow any uploads of files.
Himitsu Posted August 23, 2003 Posted August 23, 2003 Anatoli, I am starting to look for a host for my DB, but I am not sure how to do it. My company uses the DB for students and classes. But this april, we are making another school and we need to access the same DB from remote locations. I heard that we have to put it on a FM server then we can access it through the IP address. Is this right? and how much? If you could email me, that would be great. [email protected]
Anatoli Posted August 23, 2003 Posted August 23, 2003 You have basic 3 option: Connect to FM server from FM Pro client. The connection must be fast. Server is $999. Use Instant or Custom Web publishing. Then you need only browsers as clients. For more than 10 IP in 12-hour period you need FM Unlimited -- $999. You can also use Lasso. On Windows use Terminal Services with VLA (license) FM. Works from 64kb connection.
R2D2 Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 Hi ! A newbie question : Do I need to set up my own server, or can I just upload FM-online solution to "public" ISP:s server to my site ? Arttu
Garry Claridge Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 You need to have FM running, with the database files open, for it to work. All the best. Garry
Unable Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 "The site I've built is a community service site (lots of time in it, no money)." Altruism, I'd like to introduce you to Capitalism. Serve it yourself. Cheap! FMPro 4.0. Acts same as Unlimited, i.e., unlimited visitors. FMPro 4.0 Problems? Only one token and no InlineAction. So if there is a problem it is one of design talent. Pretty much any cheap used machine can serve it. Price? Depends on what you can find and how well you bargain. Then you need to pay only a monthly to an ISP for a static address. ISP's often give a price break if you pay a year in advance.
ErnieG Posted August 26, 2003 Posted August 26, 2003 As for uploading your FM solution to a "public" ISP, it would have to be one that specifically supports FileMaker databases. (I think I Googled "internet provider" + filemaker.) I've seen them at anything from $30 a month for one database under 5 megs up to a $100 a month. That's not necessarily a bad deal, depending on what your own ISP would charge for the extra of having a static address . . . also considering the issues of having your computer running all the time, battery backup, etc. On the other hand you give up a bit of convenience in testing and fixing right away.
