I have configured FMP 6 to run on the web. Everything is fine except the "new" row in the portal is not accepting entry properly. The choices in the dropdowns can be selected as expected, but the fields in the new row that are supposed to accept free form text are not accepting entry. Any idea how to fix? I searched the forum history without finding a solution...

p.s. Upgrading from 5 to 6 made the existing portal rows appear properly on the web. With, V5 I had to submit a change to the record before the existing portal data would appear at all.

"but the fields in the new row that are supposed to accept free form text are not accepting entry"

What makes you think that on the www they are "supposed" to do anything?

What have you done as a db developer to cause the WYSIWYG "on the fly" HTML:/CDML generation to function as you want it? The success (or failure) of IWP depends upon you and your abilities as developer.

"INSTANT" - yeah, right!

I guess you are saying that this will not work out of the box and I need to code in CDML to make this work properly (I guess I just wasted $100 to upgrade to version 6). Should I not bother to call Filemaker to try to make this work with IWP? What is the best web resource to learn CDML?

If you know HTML, the best resource is the CDML Reference Database. Search that string in the CDML Forum. You should find at least one link. There are many working examples in the Sample Files forum which use many of the CDML tags and explore specific situations. Most things CDML are rather straightforward. Some require a bit of JavaScript.

IWP does "work out of the box", but is limited in what it can self-generate.

Learning how to make IWP work has a learning curve. Learning CDML also has a learning curve, but offers much more control to the developer. You will be more satisfied with the latter. laugh.gif

No, you did not waste $100. But if you want to give version 6 away ...

Bon chance

Howdy! There are PDFs FileMaker has produced about Web Publishing that discuss Instant Web Publishing, Custom Web Publishing, Security, etc. and they should not be too hard to find. We use v4.0, v5.5, and v.6 and the docs vary but you should be able to scrounge them up if you don't have them in your FileMaker Pro application folders somewhere. The v.5/6 CDML Reference db can be downloaded from FMP, Inc. Right now it is on the front page of their downloads section here...

There are many tips for beginners right here in these forums. Many experts (and Unable) have posted sample files and stuff in the samples section (I have not checked them out, though, so cannot give you a recommendation).

If you do not know HTML but have some kind of programming experience (even limited), you should be able to pick it up fairly quickly. Look at some more posts with code and if it freaks you out, then maybe you shouldn't waste your time. If it looks manageable, I say GO FOR IT.

There's lots of folks here who will help you when you get stuck. Some folks will hint at solutions while others will fix it for you but you'll almost always get some kind of answer fairly quickly... just try to search the posts first (we don't remind repeating sometimes but over-and-over again is a drag), and try to at least look at the CDML reference database first.

Welcome aboard the CDML train!
