-Queue- Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Here's a Decimal to Base-n converter for Bases 2 through 36 using a fairly simple algorithm. Simply change the number in the Base column to see the converted results for the first 20,000 integers. Note that zero is excluded in the sample, but accounted for in the main function. BaseX.zip
Ender Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Now tell the truth, you did that just for fun didn't you?
-Queue- Posted August 19, 2004 Author Posted August 19, 2004 Actually, I did it to help solve a problem that's been bugging me for months involving converting integers to alpha characters. First I needed a solid grasp of converting to base 27. So I decided to figure it out for Base X. I hope to post the alpha file soon, if I get it resolved today.
Lee Smith Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 Hi JT. Seems like someone has too much time on their hands. I found out after the fact that it is a v7 file, Is this a remake of a v5 you posted earlier ? Lee
Ender Posted August 19, 2004 Posted August 19, 2004 If you're trying decode that secret message without the decoder ring, I think I may already have the answer: "D R I N K M O R E O V A L T I N E".
-Queue- Posted August 19, 2004 Author Posted August 19, 2004 Lee, nope I never resolved this for 5.5. But it is in the Custom Function forum, which implies Dev 7. Ender, daddy's gonna kill Ralphie! Seriously though, it was for this thread.
-Queue- Posted August 21, 2004 Author Posted August 21, 2004 Success! Here's an Integer to Alpha and Alpha to Integer file. The functions are thoroughly commented, I hope. Int2Alpha2Int.zip
Ender Posted August 21, 2004 Posted August 21, 2004 Your secret code breaking scheme is complete! Seriously, though, it's impressive.
-Queue- Posted August 21, 2004 Author Posted August 21, 2004 Thanks, Ender! And here's the 5.5 version for Lee. Unfortunately, it must be scripted. But at least it works! Int2Alpha2Intv5.zip
Lee Smith Posted August 21, 2004 Posted August 21, 2004 Very Slick I'll need to take a look at it when my company leaves. Thanks JT, Lee
Barbecue Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 Thanks, guys, this is great! Now if Santa will just bring me that Red Ryder BB gun, my holiday season will be complete...
transpower Posted November 24, 2004 Posted November 24, 2004 -Queue-: Please add these functions to Brian Dunning's list of custom functions: http://www.briandunning.com/filemaker-custom-functions/recentlist.php Super neat.
-Queue- Posted November 24, 2004 Author Posted November 24, 2004 Done. Barbecue, you'd shoot your eye out with that!
-Queue- Posted November 25, 2004 Author Posted November 25, 2004 Thanks. It was a lot easier than I had tried to make it for days on end. I nearly gave up until I found a C program someone had written that was very similar. Then it was like a 'duh!' ephiphany and I banged it out in a couple of hours.
LaRetta Posted November 27, 2004 Posted November 27, 2004 Very cool, JT! Now how am I going to get any work done when I have this new toy to devour? So much to learn and so little time. Within 30 minutes, I've been hit with several new ideas and uses. I can't wait to take them for a test drive! LaRetta
-Queue- Posted November 28, 2004 Author Posted November 28, 2004 Thanks, LaRetta! It only took three months for this to catch your eye?
LaRetta Posted November 28, 2004 Posted November 28, 2004 Three months, JT!? How time flies! Well, I admit I read the subject ... and even read your original post. And it made no sense to me and I couldn't see what it could possibly be used for! Since I had no idea what BaseX Converter meant, I doubted I would use it for a while (my math skills are a tad-bit weak, hah!) and I've been wonderfully busy. I'm beginning to realize that these 'strange math things' you use are actually applicable in real-life situations and aren't simply abstract, archaic concepts. I remember copying the post to my Study folder and there it sat ... along with 130 other items of yours. I'm a bit behind ... If you would slow down a bit, I might catch up on them. LaRetta
Ender Posted November 28, 2004 Posted November 28, 2004 I remember copying the post to my Study folder and there it sat ... along with 130 other items of yours. Did any of my posts make it to your Study folder?
LaRetta Posted November 28, 2004 Posted November 28, 2004 Mike, my Study folder contains 12 folders. I have a Queue folder, an Andy folder, a Ray folder, ... and an Ender folder ... and 8 others; all whose wisdom, principles, and clarity of thinking, I hope to totally absorb - even more than a specific technique they may implement in any single post (although they are certainly linked)! LaRetta
