August 5, 200520 yr Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows if you can develop a system in filemaker as a stand alone solution that allows multi user logins over a network? Thanks, Coffee.
August 6, 200520 yr The good news is that it's technically possible using plugins to help you get the job done. The bad news, I'm sorry to tell you, is that if you read the EULA you'll find there are extreme limitations that are placed on what you can actually do. Your plan sounds like it violates one of them. The cost of migrating your application to FM Server or FM Server Advanced is also amazingly high. If you have a really good idea for your application, you may want to consider continuing to develop it in FM, create the standalone, but use that development as a proof of concept. You could then seek funding to move it to another development environment... Visual Basic.net, for example. Good Luck!
August 8, 200520 yr Author I actually am running FM Server Advanced. If I run this server, am I able to get around this EULA and run a standalone solution?
August 10, 200520 yr If you want runtime users to talk to a database hosted on the server, you need to get them copies of Filemaker. Or you can use Instant Web Publishing and have them open it through a browser, or you can use Custom Web publishing and use fx.php or some other form to connect to the database on FMSA. IWP (Instant Web Publishing) is very clunky in my opinion, I use Lasso 7 to connect to our server, but it costs about 1k I think, there are free methods and tutorials that could help you though.

By "standalone" I presume you mean a run-time solution? If so, the answer is NO. A run-time must be created using FileMaker Pro Advanced on the OS where it is to be run. This usually is not an issue. On the other question in this thread, run-times are not networkable. They have not been so since FileMaker Pro 3 days. Steven

No. You need to produce the Standalone in a Windows environment. Your FileMaker applications Disk has both versions on it. On the Mac, you can use a window emulator like Bootcamp and Window to produce your windows copy. HTH Lee

March 12, 201114 yr Ok. Thank you ! When I bought a Mac I promised to myself that I'll never touch Windows again. But now it seems I must... Although I'm a "dyed in the wool" Mac user I must admit or confess that I still (as much as I'm tempted) would never promise to "never touch Windows again". If you develop there's not much choice! My sympathies, RW
