March 10, 200817 yr I have a Tab controlled by lets say Project"TV0509" This project number is linked and input in the tab from the main layout. Now, the portal is linked to the tab by the Above project number with a Mix# added in the tab layout. So lets say the Portal is linked to the tab by "TV05091" then When I want to add another mix to the tab I start a new record and name it mix 2 which would change the "TV05091" to "TV05092" now my totals change in the tab accordingly but,the problem is, The portal line items still show mix1 and mix2 at the same time in the list. How can mix 2 show in the portal when the tab is in mix one. There is no logical connections between the two? To my logic when the tab is in mix one the portal line item sould list mix one and when the tab is in mix two the portal line items should list mix 2, not both one and two. I'm sorry if I shound like I am ranting but I am trying to include as much info as possibel. The table the portal is feeding has no field for the main Project code just the mix code. So there is no logical conection to show both mixes at one time. Thanks The Tramp
March 10, 200817 yr Having seperate tabs do not mean that your portals are for different data. Please keep in mind that portals are merely "windows" into the related Table Occurences. The tab control is there to manage layout info. In order for you to have each tab represent a different perspective to the related data that your portal is using, you will need to either use some kind of filtered portal or use seperate portals on each tab; each reflecting the table occurrence they represent.
March 10, 200817 yr Author The main layout reprsents a table. Each tab represents its own respective table. The Portal within the tab in question represents its own table. Like I said, No logical connection. The Tramp

March 13, 200817 yr You shouldnt really nest portals within each other like this. You are better off with one portal and have it so that you change the criteria to display what is in the portal. What exactly are you trying to achieve here.

March 14, 200817 yr Author I think we hijacked someone's thread over there. I reposted here for practice. 03-14-08 07:23 AM - Post#284675 In response to mr_vodka I'm sorry, but how do you change the criteria of a portal the only controle I know of is the "Portal Setup", And is there a way to create a new file in a tab, That is the reason I have it set up the way I do. I need the main controle page,I need the tab, but I need the tabe to be able to create a second or so on, file with files under that as it is set up. I could do it in access but I am new to FM. I am learning most of the things I can do in access I can do in FM. But, unfortunatly this isn't one of them. I have to maintain the Company Information (Main), Qty of Applications and Name of Application(tab/Portal1), and The mixture of each application(Server or Portal2) Thanks The Tramp mr_vodka Said:You shouldnt really nest portals within each other like this. March 18, 200817 yr Author I'm still at a loss, I don't understand the hazard of nesting portals. The logic supports the operation. If the ID number in the main table controls the Subordinant table why wouldn't that tabels ID number controle it's subordinant table? and so on, and on... It would be just like a multi-nested "if". March 19, 200817 yr Author Ok If I can't do it with a portal Here is my problem... I have my main header controling a tab... the tab controles a portal. The header is the forman's jobs for the week. The tab is the Chemical mix title (Mix1)with what he covered with that mix. The Portal is the details of what was in the mix ChemName... Qty... Now, How do I maintain my Header and move to a new Mix (Mix2) in my tab and detailes for mix2 in the portal? Everyone is saying what ever you can do in Access you can do in File Maker. Any Ideas??? Thanks The Tramp Edited March 19, 200817 yr by Guest
March 19, 200817 yr The short answer is "global fields". Since you are expecting to view different things in the same space on the layout, without moving to different records, then you will need to use global fields so you can change the originating keys of the relationships, without changing actual data. Your "Main Table" appears to be a "Project week" table (don't know why). The field you must change to view different items in the ChemMix portal is Mix Code. So you'll need a _gMixCode global field. The portal must then be based on a different relationship, using the global. Keep the "real" relationship also, just don't use it for this portal; the global is really only for viewing; the real one is for many other uses (reports, etc.). The _gMixCode would need to be either a value list filtered by Project_Week, or a portal based on the same relational filter. Either would work; it depends on which is best for the interface. Also, I recommend that you give your portals a background color. Transparent portals "flash" too much. (P.S. I'm not too crazy about your "MixCode" concatenated field. I think MixNo by itself is sufficient. But I left it as is.) Main_Table_fej.fp7.zip
