I have scoured the internet to find out if attaching a Password protected PDF to an email is HIPAA compliant. All I see talked about is encrypting the email itself. Does anyone know if attaching an encrypted, password protected PDF to an email is considered HIPAA compliant?

As a developer of medical solutions we are familiar with and practice HIPAA compliant practices in our applications. But we also desire to connect with other hospital databases through either HL7 and/or DICOM. I was wondering if anyone else has researched such connectivity through FM7 and would like to discuss it in this thread.

How do I send electronic claims transmission to Medicare or a clearing house like eclaims. They require file format of HCFA print image or a NSF file. Does anyone know how to get these file formats out of Filemaker. I believe that there is already Filemaker based software that can send an electronic claim to a clearhouse, but I just don't how they do it. Any ideas?

similar to the 837 file question posted here earlier, I'm looking into parsing out information from a 835 file. The text parsing is not a problem, but what is a problem is that I can't find any information on what each segment means (in plain English). Does anyone have any information on what each segment means, and where to locate it inside the file? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a concise list/outline of HIPAA requirements for software apps. We generally leave it up to our clients to determine the compliance of the apps that we customize for them, but we would like to know the true requirements.

Working on a medical record solution. I will need to make it hipaa compliant. My understanding is it needs 1)automatic logout (can be done by fm server) 2)user id and password for each person (again can be done by server) 3) audit tracking (has to record the current user when making an entry. What about modifying an entry?) 4)electronic signature - anyone have ideas on this one. how about cosignature. Nurse enters and doctor signs later? 5)anyone dealt with importing lab values into filemaker from a standard lab database? Looking forward to suggestions and discussion

Lets try to get some activity on this part of the Board! One part of HIPAA states that a computer program must provide some sort of 'timeout' feature. Similar to what a screen saver does. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to automatically turn on a screen saver based on INACTIVITY in a Filemaker solution? Does anyone have a good plug in for locking a system after a period of inactivity? Are these x platform solutions? TIA Jerry
