How to input Unicode characters in FM7?

Featured Replies

  • Newbies

Hi there.

I'm trying to discover how to input Unicode characters in FM7....

I'm used to inputting character codes, such as &#x1E63, in XHTML and seeing them render properly in a web browser with the appropriate font (such as Gentium) installed.

This doesn't work in FM7, I've noticed..... So how to go about it? Do I need to devise a custom keyboard arrangement that will input the Unicode characters I need, or is there some other way to go about this?

Any ideas? All help greatly appreciated....

PJC

The easiest way to do that is to use Tavultesoft's Keyman utility: www.tavultesoft.com

They have links to many customized keyboard layouts for use with Keyman, or you can make your own with Keyman Developer.

I use it constantly for inputting ancient Greek in FM databases and it works very well--and the Gentium font that you're using has superb Greek and Greek Extended range support (though that may not be your need). It has a very broad range of diacritics and support for many languages that use the basic Roman characters.

I case you (or anyone else searching on "Unicode" in this forum) do need to work with ancient Greek in Unicode format, you might be interested in the material that I've posted at the f. URL (it's not FM specific; mostly word processing, but it all works the same way):

Any suggestions on how to enter unicode on Mac OS X?

Or suggestions about fonttools that tell more about this unicode?
